Leaders Pay Tribute on 18th Anniversary of 2001 Parliament Attack

President Ram Nath Kovind and Union ministers on Friday, 13 December, paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the 2001 Parliament attack.

PM Narendra Modi, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu and Home Minister Amit Shah were among those who paid tribute at the Parliament. Former PM Manmohan Singh and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad were also present at the ceremony.

President Kovind, in a tweet, said the nation saluted the courage and valour of the martyrs who had died in the attack.

Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad tweeted, "Today let us remember the martyrs who sacrificed their lives defending and protecting the Parliament of India from the terrorist attack."

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, too, saluted the bravehearts who lost their lives in the attack.

Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi were also present at the ceremony.

In a message on Twitter, West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee said that terrorism and violence have no place in a civilised society.

Eighteen years ago on 13 December, terrorists of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) attacked the Parliament complex and opened fire killing nine people.

The victims included five Delhi Police personnel, a woman Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) trooper, two Parliament watch and ward staff and a gardener. A journalist who was injured died later. All five terrorists were shot dead.
