BJP Calls For Bandh in Protest of Student Deaths in Islampur Clash

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for a 12-hour, statewide bandh in West Bengal on Wednesday, 26 September in protest of the death of two students in Islampur on 20 September.

The two students were killed when protesters clashed with the police over recruitment of a Urdu teacher at Daribhita High School in North Dinajpur district. Students had demanded that teachers be recruited for science and other subjects, PTI reported.

Six Northern States Agree for Uniform Fuel Prices

Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and union territory of Chandigarh have agreed to move towards uniform fuel rates, ANI reported. The decision was reached at a meeting of Finance Ministers and officers of Northern States held in Chandigarh on Tuesday. Participating states have decided to constitute sub-committee for the same, the news agency added.

Indian Economy Maintains Steady Growth Path, Forecast at 7.3%

India's economy continues on a robust growth path, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) said Wednesday, 26 September while maintaining the growth forecast for the current fiscal at 7.3 percent.

However, depreciation of the rupee and volatile external financial markets pose challenges, the multilateral lending agency added, in an update of its flagship annual economic publication, the Asian Development Outlook (ADO) 2018.

French President Emmanuel Macron has said that the Rafale deal was a "government-to-government" discussion and he was not in power when the multi-billion dollar agreement for 36 fighter jets was signed between India and France.

Addressing a press conference on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session, Macron was asked if the Indian government had at any point told France or Dassault - the French aerospace major - that they had to accept Reliance as the Indian partner for the Rafale deal.

New Born Baby Thrown into Bushes in Tamil Nadu, Rescued

A new born baby was rescued from Hosur district’s Achettipalli village in Tamil Nadu. He was thrown into the bushes and was rescued by passersby who heard him crying, ANI reported. The infant has been admitted to hospital and a probe is underway

One of the rescuers, Mutugamma, told ANI “I brought him to hospital. He was bitten by ants all over the body. I want to adopt him.”

Nagaraj Decision Clarified By SC; Reference To Larger Bench Declined

The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed a plea challenging the appointment of Justice Ranjan Gogoi as the next Chief Justice of India, saying the petition was "devoid of merits".

A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice A M Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud said: "We are of the view that it is not the stage to interfere (with the appointment)."

The petition against Justice Gogoi's appointment as the next CJI was filed by two lawyers who were seeking adjudication of the question of law relying on the contents of the press conference of 12 January, called by four senior judges of the apex court.

Pompeo to Travel to N Korea to Plan Trump-Kim Summit

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will travel to Pyongyang in October to prepare a second summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, the Department of State said in a communique on Wednesday.

Pompeo met on Wednesday at the United National General Assembly with his North Korean counterpart, Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho, to discuss the upcoming summit, Efe reported.

At that meeting, Pompeo "accepted Chairman Kim's invitation to travel to Pyongyang next month," said the State Department.

BHU Violence: Students Made to Vacate 5 Varsity Hostels

Following a clash between students and resident doctors at Sir Sunderlal Hospital, five hostels of Banaras Hindu University were vacated on Wednesday, 26 September and the security in and around the campus was heightened with the police maintaining security using drone cameras, said officials.

The five hostels whose boarders were ordered to move out were Birla, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Dhanwantri, Ruiya Medical and Ruiya Annexe.

The students of Birla and Lal Bahadur Shastri hostel sat on a dharna on Tuesday, demanding revocation of yesterday's hostel vacation order.
