At least 600 new COVID-19 positive cases including 399 in Chennai were reported in Tamil Nadu on Friday, 8 May, Health Minister C Vijayabaskar said. The total Number of COVID-19 cases has reached 6,009 in Tamil Nadu including 1,605 recovered/discharged and 40 deaths. Number of active cases stands at 4,361.

Meanwhile, the number of coronavirus cases in India rose to 56,342 on Friday. According to the Health Ministry data, there are now 37,916 active cases across the country, while 1,886 people have died. As many as 16,539 patients have been cured or discharged and one has migrated.

The Madras High Court on Friday, 8 May ordered closure of all state-run TASMAC liquor shops in Tamil Nadu and permitted only online sale of liquor.

The number of coronavirus cases in India rose to 56,342 on Friday. According to the Health Ministry data, there are now 37,916 active cases across the country, while 1,886 people have died. As many as 16,539 patients have been cured or discharged and one has migrated.

In the last 24 hours, 3,390 cases and 103 deaths have been reported.

The Supreme Court on Friday disposed of a petition seeking clarity on the sale of liquor, and to ensure social distancing while it is being sold in liquor shops during the lockdown, ANI reported.

"We will not pass any order but the states should consider indirect sale or home delivery of liquor to maintain social distancing norms and standards", Justice Ashok Bhushan was quoted as saying.

COVID-19 Death Toll in MP Rises to 86

The COVID-19 death toll in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore rose to 86 on Friday, with the number of cases climbing to 1,727, PTI reported.

COVID-19 Patient Dies Due to Co-Morbidity in Gautam Buddh Nagar

Gautam Buddh Nagar District Magistrate Suhas LY said on Friday that a COVID-19 patients has died due to a co-morbidity.

"We have received information from the Government Institute of Medical Sciences
that a COVID-19 patient has died due to a co-morbidity. He used to travel to Delhi from here for work. We are tracing his contact history," he was quoted by ANI as saying.

Air India Flight En Route to Srinagar Under Vande Bharat Mission

An Air India flight under the Vande Bharat Mission took off from Dhaka in Bangladesh to Srinagar, ANI reported.

"The passengers are students who study in medical colleges here (in Bangladesh). A total of seven flights will depart from Dhaka under the mission," Riva Ganguly Das, the Indian envoy to Bangladesh, was quoted as saying.

64 New Cases in Rajasthan

At least 64 more people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Rajasthan, taking the total number of cases to 3,491 out of which 1,475 cases are active. Number of deaths stands at 100.

30 New Cases Among BSF Personnel

At least 30 new cases of COVID-19 among BSF personnel - 6 from Delhi and 24 from Tripura - have been reported from different establishments. All of them are under the best available medical care at AIIMS, Jhajjar and at GB Pant Hospital in Agartala.

COVID-19 Tally Among CISF personnel Rises to 35

At least 35 personnel of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) have been tested positive for COVID-19 so far. Eleven of them were deployed in Mumbai airport, 11 others were performing duty with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, three were deployed at Delhi airport and two were at Mumbai port.

Railways Ran 222 Shramik Trains So Far

Railways has run 222 Shramik Special Trains for movement of stranded persons, more than 2.5 lakh people have made use of this facility so far, Punya Salila Srivastava, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said in a media briefing.

COVID-19 Recovery Rate at 29.36%: Health Ministry

Lav Agrawal, Joint Secy, Health Ministry said that the recovery rate in India is improving.

“In the last 24 hours, there were 3,390 new COVID-19 positive cases and 1273 recoveries. The recovery percentage is now 29.36%. Till now, 16,540 patients have been cured and 37,916 patients are under active medical supervision,” he said.

“In 216 districts in the country no positive cases of COVID19 have been detected. In 42 districts no new cases have been detected in the last 28 days,” he added.

12 New Cases in Noida

At least 12 new COVID-19 positive cases reported in Noida today, taking the total number of positive cases in the district to 214.

One New Case in Kerala

A person, who returned from Chennai, has tested positive for COVID-19 in Ernakulam today, taking total number of active cases to 16 in Kerala.

48 New Cases in Karnataka

At least 48 new positive cases reported in Karnataka today. The total number of positive cases in the state is now 753.

Odisha Increases Quarantine Period to 28 Days

Odisha government increases quarantine period to 28 days from 14 days including 21 days institutional quarantine and subsequent 7 days home quarantine. All returnees will have to follow the norms. Decision taken in view of 28 days incubation period of COVID-19 virus.

COVID-19 Positive Staffers of Delhi Hospitals Quarantined

Till today, 10 healthcare staff at Delhi's Hindu Rao Hospital and 5 at Kasturba Hospital have been found positive for COVID-19, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation said. They have been sent to quarantine.

No Need for Army in Mumbai: CM Thackeray

Addressing rumours of Army being deployed in Mumbai, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray said that the step is not necessary and it help of central forces will be taken only if the police forces need to be given rest.

“There has been a rumour for the past 2-3 days that army will be deployed in Mumbai. There is no need for army deployment here. Whatever I've done till today I've done by informing citizens. You all should be disciplined and that will be enough. No need to call army here” he said.

“Police force is under tremendous pressure. If we need more forces we will ask for central forces in order to give some rest to our police. But that will not mean that army has been called. It will be done only if needed, ” he said.

3 New Cases in Himachal

One person each tested positive for COVID-19 in Kangra, Chamba and Una districts, taking total number of active cases to 10 in Himachal Pradesh. This includes a two years old girl from Chamba.

155 New Cases in UP

At least 155 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Uttar Pradesh, taking total number of cases to 3,214 including 1,387 discharges and 66 deaths. Number of active cases stands at 1,761.

22 New Cases in Haryana

At least 22 new COVID-19 positive cases reported in Haryana, taking the total number of positive cases to 647.

PM Modi Discusses Pandemic With Italian PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a phone call today with Italian PM Giuseppe Conte. He conveyed his condolences for the loss of lives in Italy caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The two leaders discussed measures required to address the health and economic impact of the pandemic in their own countries as well as at a global level. They expressed solidarity with each other and appreciated mutual cooperation extended towards each other’s stranded nationals,” the PMO said.
