The number of coronavirus cases in India rose by 10,667 to 3,43,091 on Tuesday, 16 June, while 380 more fatalities took the death toll to 9,900. According to the Union Health Ministry data, there are now 1,53,178 active cases across the country, while 1,80,012 patients have been cured or discharged.

A meet between PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah and the Chief Ministers of certain states and Union Territories is underway. A separate meeting with the remaining states will happen tomorrow.

  • Globally, there have been more than 8 million cases of coronavirus, with India being fourth in the list of worst-affected countries
  • As many as 2,786 new COVID-19 cases and 178 deaths were recorded in Maharashtra on Monday, taking the case tally to 1,10,744 and the death toll to 4,128
  • 1,647 new cases were reported in Delhi on Monday, taking its total to more than 42,000
  • The Tamil Nadu Cabinet on Monday announced a complete lockdown in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chengalpet districts from 19 to 30 June

Amid COVID-19 Surge, PM to Interact With CMs Today and Tomorrow

Amid a surge in coronavirus cases across the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be interacting with chief ministers of 21 states and Union territories on Tuesday. Among the states participating in Tuesday's meeting would be Punjab, Tripura, Goa, Manipur and Meghalaya, among others.

On Wednesday, Modi will interact with CMs of 15 states and UTs, including the worst-affected states of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Gujarat.

Meet With CMs: PM Lauds India’s COVID Fight, Talks Self-Reliance

Prime Minister Modi addressed the chief ministers of states and heads of union territories on the COVID-19 situation and stressed on the importance of precautions against the virus and a self-reliant India.

“Two weeks have passed since Unlock 1, our experience during this time could be beneficial for us in future. Today I will get to know ground reality from you, your suggestions will help in chalking out future strategy,” PM Modi told the CM in a public address.

“In last few weeks, thousands of Indians returned to India from abroad and hundreds of migrant workers reached their home towns. Almost all modes of transport have resumed operations, still COVID-19 impact has not been that huge in India as in other parts of world,” he added.

79 New Cases in Kerala

At least 79 persons have tested positive for COVID-19 in Kerala today. Number of active cases stand at 1,366.

1515 New Cases in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu reports 1,515 new COVID-19 positive cases and 49 deaths. Number of persons tested positive till date stands at 48,019 and death toll is at 528.

78 New Cases in J&K

At least 78 new COVID-19 positive cases have been reported in Jammu and Kashmir — 16 from Jammu division and 62 from Kashmir division. Total number of cases stand at 5,298 including 2,454 active cases and 63 deaths.

317 New Cases in Karnataka

At least 317 new COVID-19 positive cases have been reported in Karnataka, taking the total number of cases to 7,530. Death toll stands at 94 after seven deaths were reported today.

Delhi Hospitals Performed Last Rites of COVID Patients: Home Ministry

Following Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s directions, all hospitals in Delhi performed the last rites of COVID-19 deceased with consent or presence of their familiee, ANI reported spokesperson, Ministry of Home Affairs as saying.
