Police used water cannons to disperse workers of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) who were protesting in Siliguri, West Bengal, against CAA, NRC and were demanding jobs, reported ANI on Wednesday, 12 February.

A resolution urging the Centre to repeal the Citizenship (Amendment) Act was passed in the Puducherry Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.

Three BJP MLAs had walked out of the state Assembly after the government introduced the resolution in the House. Meanwhile, the MLAs of AIADMK and All India NR Congress boycotted the proceedings of the House, reported ANI.

A special Assembly session had been called for the resolution.

Delhi Police Releases Photos of 70 People Involved in Violence Near Jamia

Delhi Police on Wednesday released photos of 70 people who were allegedly involved in violence during the anti-CAA protests near Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi last month, officials said.

On 15 December last year, the police had entered the campus and used force against students claiming violence during anti-CAA protests at the University.

European Parliament Debates Anti-CAA Motion

A joint motion, combining five different resolutions tabled by Members of the European Parliament against India's Citizenship (Amendment) Act, was debated at the Plenary session in Brussels on Thursday, 30 January, PTI reported.

The debate opened with a statement by Helena Dalli, the vice president of the European Commission and High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, who spoke strongly in favour of the "rich, frank and open" relationship the European Union (EU) shares with India.

BJP’s candidate for Delhi’s Hari Nagar, Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga, on Thursday, 30 January, said on his twitter that Shaheen Bagh has become the hub of anti-nationals. He also said that a ‘surgical strike’ will be conducted on Shaheen Bagh on 11 February, as soon as the Delhi polls results come in.

“Shaheen Bagh protesters at Jantar Mantar yesterday, said that the Indian Army kills its own people, and compare the Indian Army to the Pakistani Army. Shaheen Bagh has become the base of anti-nationals. A surgical strike will be conducted on these bases on the 11th of February,” Bagga said in a tweet.

Kanhaiya Detained, Released in Bihar's Champaran

Kanhaiya Kumar, former president of JNU Students Union, was taken into custody by the police in Champaran, Bihar and later released. Kumar had arrived in Champaran, Bihar to join the protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act and NRC at a Mahatma Gandhi Ashram, on the day of Gandhi’s death anniversary.

Man Shoots at Jamia Protesters, One Injured

A man, who was seen pointing a gun at anti-CAA protesters outside Jamia Millia Islamia, has reportedly shot at the protesters, leaving one injured. The incident occurred amid heavy police force deployment in the area.

The injured us being identified as a student of the university, named Shadab Najar. he is a student of Mass Communication, according to reports.

According to an NDTV report, the armed man has been arrested.

Jamia Firing ‘Direct Result' of Remarks Made by BJP Leaders During Campaigning: D Raja

CPI general secretary D Raja on Thursday said the incident of firing at Jamia Milia Islamia was a "direct result" of provocative comments made by BJP leaders while campaigning for the Delhi Assembly polls.

Raja told PTI that it was unfortunate that such an incident had happened on the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

"Jamia firing incident is a direct result of provocative statements made by BJP leaders during campaigning in Delhi. BJP leader Anurag Thakur should be arrested for his comments urging crowds to raise slogans of shoot the traitors," Raja said.

'Apprehended Person Being Questioned': DCP Chinmoy Biswal

Speaking on the firing incident at Jamia Nagar on Thursday, DCP Chimnoy Biswal said that the student has sustained injuries on his left hand and has been referred to the trauma centre.

“Doctors say he is out of danger. Apprehended person (Gopal) is being questioned,” he added.

Biswal was further quoted by CNN News18 as saying, “The person brandishing pistol came out from the crowd of protesters only. Essentially saying that he didn't come from outside. Question them (organisers) who made a public call that anybody can join the protest.”

People Protesting Outside Rajghat Detained

People protesting outside Rajghat in Delhi against the CAA and NRC were detained by the police on Thursday.

Regarding the protest CPI leader, D Raja told ANI, “We went to Rajghat to take part in the human chain, in protest against CAA-NRC. Delhi Police has arrested other leaders and me. We don't know where they are taking us.”

Yogendra Yadav, Prashant Bhushan Detained from Delhi Gate

Swaraj India’s Yogendra Yadav tweeted on Thursday that he has been detained along with Prashant Bhushan and around 50 other protesters from the Delhi Gate area.

FIR Filed Under Section 307 Against Man Who Opened Fire at Jamia

Hours after a man fired a pistol at a group of protesters in the Jamia area, leading to a student being injured, the Delhi Police registered an FIR against him under Section 307 (Attempt to murder) of the IPC as well as the Arms Act.

Speaking on the protests, Joint Commissioner of Police Devesh Shrivastava said, “They wanted permission to protest at Raj Ghat. We have stopped them here as they do not have any such permission. An FIR has been registered against the person who opened fire under Section 307 IPC and Arms Act, and further investigation is on.”

Protest Outside Jamia Millia Ends After Police Release 4 Detainees

A group of protesters gathered outside the office of Republic TV at Kamla Mill compound in central Mumbai on late Thursday night, the police said.

Earlier, messages asking people to gather at the English news channel's office for a protest against "misreporting" of the firing incident outside Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi by a section of media were circulating on social media.

Police personnel were deployed in large number outside the channel's office and there was no untoward incident so far, a police official said.

'No Protests on Campus,' Says Jamia Registrar

Registrar of Jamia University in a statement said that no protest meetings or mass gathering will be allowed on university campus as this can lead to an attempt of disruption of peace at JMI, reports ANI.

“It is to inform that any kind of protest meeting, agitation, speeches&mass gathering or any unlawful activities causing inconvenience&disruption in the day to day academic functioning are not allowed anywhere in the campus,” the Registrar said.

Man Fires in Shaheen Bagh Area, Taken Into Custody

A man on Saturday fired two rounds in air in the Shaheen Bagh area, where an anti-CAA protest is on, following which he was taken into custody by police, eyewitnesses said.

No one was injured in the incident which occurred at around 4:53 pm.

Delhi DCP Chinmay Biswal on incident of firing in Shaheen Bagh told ANI, “The man had resorted to aerial firing. Police immediately overpowered and caught him.”

"Only Hindus will get to call the shots in our country and nobody else (Hamare desh mein sirf Hinduon ki chalegi. Aur kisi ki nahi chalegi)," the man shouted while he was being taken into custody.

Abu Ala Suhani, a publisher and resident of Shaheen Bagh said, "The man appeared be in his 20s and fired two rounds. While he was being taken into custody, we heard a policeman asking him his name. The man said his name was Kapil Gujjar and he belongs to Dallupura village in Uttar Pradesh."

He shouted "Hindu Rashtra Zindabad" and fired two rounds.

'Kejriwal Supplying Biryani to Shaheen Bagh Protesters': Yogi Adityanath

On Saturday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, while addressing a poll rally in Delhi said that Arvind Kejriwal government is supplying biryani to protesters at Shaheen Bagh, PTI reported.

He further said, “Those who support terrorists in Kashmir are staging protest in Shaheen Bagh and raising slogans of “azadi.”

Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy on Saturday, 1 February, said the Congress party was firm on its anti-Citizenship Amendment Act stand and his government will not allow its implementation in the Union Territory, even if it meant losing power.

Addressing an anti-CAA rally, organised by various organisations at Karaikal, Narayanasamy said the Puducherry Assembly session was slated to begin on 12 February and the government was planning to pass a resolution opposing the implementation of the CAA, National Register of Citizens and National Population Register in the Union Territory.

"CAA divides people based on religion and we are firm on our stand opposing it. We will not allow its implementation (CAA, NRC, NPR) in Puducherry. We do not care if we would remain in power or not fortaking a principled stand," he said.

FIR Is Being Registered: Delhi DCP on Shaheen Bagh Firing Incident

On Saturday, 1 February, Delhi DCP Chinmoy Biswal said that an FIR has been registered against the person who opened fire at Shaheen Bagh, ANI reported

“Police overpowered and detained him on the spot while he was firing in the air. He is being interrogated, he said that his name is Kapil. FIR is being registered, further investigation underway,” he told ANI.

'Yeh Humein Goliyon Se Daraayeinge': Protesters on Shaheen Bagh Firing Incident

Reacting to the Shaheen Bagh firing incident that took place on Saturday, 1 February, former Jamia student Ayesha, referring to the ruling part, told The Quint, ‘Ye Humein goliyon se daraayeinge?’ (Translated: These people will scare us using bullets?)

Further, eye witnesses told The Quint that shooter was able to come inside as he made way though the police barricades.

Regarding the Shaheen Bagh firing incident, Delhi Police PRO Anil Mittal said that a case under relevant sections of IPC and Arms Act was registered at the Shaheen Bagh police station.

“Accused is being interrogated. He has revealed his identity as Kapil, aged 25 years and is a resident of Dallupura. Further investigation is in progress,” he said.

Delhi Police Detain Pro-CAA Protesters From Shaheen Bagh

Delhi Police detained many pro-CAA protesters who had gathered in Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh on Sunday, 2 February to end the sit-in and “clear the road.” Many protesters claimed they were “common people who were being inconvenienced by the protest” that has been continuing for over a month. However, The Quint reporter who was present at the site spotted saffron flags associated with Hindutva outfits. However, the protesters holding the flags claimed they don’t belong to any organisation.

Chinmoy Biswal, DCP South-East district, who was present at the spot said, “No permission granted to anyone to hold demonstration in&around Shaheen Bagh area against the ongoing protest here over CAA. Still, some people called on the protest today, so they were stopped and dispersed by police.”

Days After Being Interrogated by ED, SDPI Promises 'Mini-Shaheens' Across India

Panel Constituted by AMU to Probe Campus Violence Asks Students to Submit Statements by 7 Feb

A one-man judicial panel constituted by the Aligarh Muslim University to probe into violent incidents that rocked the campus in December 2019 has asked students and staffers at the AMU to submit their written statements by February 7, according to an official notification.

The probe is being conducted by retired chief justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court V K Gupta.

As per the notification issued on Saturday, students and staffers at the AMU should submit their written statements to the probe panel by 7 February, reports PTI.

Similarly, a seven-member committee of senior faculty members instituted by AMU Vice-Chancellor Tariq Mansoor to review all the FIRs registered by police against students in connection with anti-CAA protests is also expected to start functioning shortly, AMU spokesman Omar Peerzada said.

Delhi Police DCP, In-charge of Shaheen Bagh Sacked

Chinmoy Biswal, DCP, South-East Delhi, has been relieved from his present post with immediate effect, news agency ANI reported. The report said that Biswal shall report to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Biswal was appointed by the Election Commission and will be replaced by Kumar Gyanesh with immediate effect, ANI reported. Further, a PTI report said that the EC cited the "ongoing situation" in the area, which saw firing incidents outside Jamia university and at Shaheen Bagh.

Unidentified Miscreants Open Fire at Jamia Millia Islamia

Two unidentified persons opened fire at Gate No 5 of the Jamia Millia Islamia University late Sunday, 2 February, the Jamia Coordination Committee (JCC) said.

A statement issued by the committee, a group comprising students and alumni of the varsity, said the attackers were on a red scooty.  No one was injured in the attack. One of the miscreants was wearing a red jacket, the statement said.

Police said they were verifying the JCC's claims.

Case Against Unidentified Men Who Opened Fire Outside Jamia

Delhi Police have registered a case after two unidentified persons allegedly opened fire outside Jamia Millia Islamia on Sunday night, police said. No one was injured in the attack.

An FIR has been registered under Sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 27 Arms Act against unknown persons.

In a statement issued by the Jamia Coordination Committee (JCC), a group comprising students and alumni of the university formed to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act, said the attackers were on a red motorcycle.

One of the miscreants was wearing a red jacket, the statement said.

A senior police official said a case of attempt to murder under relevant sections of the IPC and the Arms Act was registered in connection with the incident and an investigation is underway.

108 More PFI Members Arrested for Violence During Anti-CAA Protests

108 people affiliated to the Popular Front of India (PFI) have been arrested in the last four days in relation to violence during the anti-CAA protests in several districts of the state, Awanish K Awasthi, Additional Chief Secretary, Uttar Pradesh Home Department, told media.

These arrests are in addition to the 25 who were arrested earlier, he said, according to ANI.

Former IPS Officer Abdur Rehman Barred From Addressing Anti-CAA Protest at AMU

Former special inspector general of police (IGP) Abdur Rehman, who was set to address a protest at the Aligarh Muslim University against the amended citizenship law, was detained by police and asked to return to New Delhi, PTI reported.

Rehman, who had resigned from his post in December last year in protest against the CAA, was detained at Lodha Police Station in Aligarh on Sunday.

No Decision yet on NRC at National Level: Mos Home

The government has not taken any decision on preparing a nationwide NRC, it reiterated in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, 4 February, amid protests against the citizens' register in the country.

"Till now, the government has not taken any decision to prepare the National Register of Indian Citizens at the national level," Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said replying a written question.

UP Police Files FIR Against 135, Arrests 20 for Anti-CAA Protests in Azamgarh

Twenty people named in the FIR have been arrested, police said.

SC Takes Suo Motu Cognisance Over Minors’ Involvement in Protests

The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance to stop involvement of minors in agitations in the wake of an infant’s death at Shaheen Bagh, PTI reported on Friday.

The apex court website showed that the issue would be taken up for hearing on 10 February by a bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde.

The matter assumes importance as a letter was recently written by a 12-year-old National Bravery Award winner to the chief justice of India seeking directions to prevent children from participating in demonstrations as it “amounts to cruelty”.

A case has been registered against the organisers and around 300 women protesters who are on a sit-in against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and NRC in Nagpada area since January 26, the police said.

CPI(M)'s Tribal Wing Protests Against CAA in Agartala

The CPI(M)'s tribal wing TRUGMP took out a march in Agartala on Saturday, 8 February, to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act or CAA.

Members of the Tripura Rajya Upajati Gana Mukti Parishad (TRUGMP) began the protest march from Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhawan and after touring several areas of the city, it culminated at Swami Vivekananda Ground.

The CPI(M) also launched a door-to-door campaign in the state against the CAA, the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR). The campaign is scheduled to continue till March.

Two Mumbai Cops Accused of Beating up Photojournalist Transferred

Two policemen who allegedly roughed up a photojournalist at an anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act protest in Mumbai have been transferred, a senior official said on Saturday, 8 February.

Assistant police inspector Ghanshyam Borse and probationary sub-inspector Azim Shaikh allegedly beat up senior photojournalist Ashish Raje on Thursday at a protest against the CAA and NRC in Nagpada area.

"Borse and Shaikh have been transferred to Central Region Control Room. Suitable disciplinary action would be taken after we receive inquiry report," said additional commissioner of police Viresh Prabhu.

Anti-CAA Protesters, BJP Supporters Clash at Kolkata Book Fair

A scuffle broke out between anti-CAA protesters and BJP supporters on Saturday, 8 February, after a senior BJP leader visited a stall at the Kolkata book fair.

The two sides exchanged blows after West Bengal BJP leader Rahul Sinha entered the stall at the 44th International Kolkata Book Fair.

A section of Left-backed students surrounded Sinha when he visited the counter, and raised slogans against the new citizenship law and the NRC. Police confirmed the incident and said a number of protesters were detained. BJP supporters claimed that one of them suffered injuries in the tussle.

Goa Archbishop Urges Government to Revoke CAA

Archbishop of Goa and Daman, Rev Filipe Neri Ferrao, has urged the central government to "immediately and unconditionally revoke the Citizenship Amendment Act" and stop quashing the "right to dissent".

He also appealed to the government not to implement the proposed countrywide National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR).

Diocesan Centre for Social Communications Media, a wing of the Goa Church, in a statement on Saturday said, "The Archbishop and the Catholic community of Goa would like to appeal to the government to listen to the voice of millions in India, to stop quashing the right to dissent and, above all, to immediately and unconditionally revoke the CAA and desist from implementing the NRC and the NPR."

The CAA, NRC and NPR are "divisive and discriminatory" and will certainly have a "negative and damaging effect" on a multi-cultural democracy like ours, the church said.

Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Passes Resolution Against CAA

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) passed a resolution against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) at its general body meeting in Hyderabad on Saturday.

'There Cannot Be Indefinite Protests in a Common Area': SC on Shaheen Bagh

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to remove people protesting in Shaheen Bagh for the time being, but added, "There cannot be indefinite protests in a common area. If everybody starts protesting everywhere, what will happen."

It set the matter for hearing on 17 February and issued notices to the Centre, the Delhi government and the police on pleas seeking removal of protesters at the site that has become epicentre of protests against CAA.

Protesters at Shaheen Bagh cannot block public roads and create inconvenience for others, the apex court said, adding that people are entitled to protest but they have to do so in an area designated for the agitation.

The bench said it would not pass any direction on the issue without hearing the other side.

Infant's Death at Shaheen Bagh: SC Issues Notice to Centre, Delhi Govt

Hundreds March to Jantar Mantar Against CAA, NRC

Hundreds of protesters, including students and civil society members, poured onto the streets in central Delhi today protesting against the amended citizenship law and the National Register of Citizens.

The protesters, carrying placards and banners of all sizes and colours, converged at Mandi House around 11 am and started marching towards Jantar Mantar where they reached around 12:30 pm via Barakhamba Road and Tolstoy Road, reported PTI.

A large number of police and paramilitary personnel walked along with them.

RTI Activist Akhil Gogoi Again Remanded to Judicial Custody

A special NIA court today remanded Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti chief advisor Akhil Gogoi, arrested under the stringent UAPA during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, to judicial custody again till 25 February .

Gogoi, also an RTI activist, has been in judicial custody since 26 December. He had mobilised public protests against the CAA across several districts in Upper Assam before his arrest on 12 December.

“The court remanded him to judicial custody again. He would be produced before the court on 25 February,” Gogoi's counsel Santanu Borthakur told PTI.

'CAA Passed by Parliament Is Applicable to Puducherry': Kiran Bedi

Two days ahead of the Congress government's move to bring in an anti-CAA resolution in the assembly, Lt Governor Kiran Bedi on today shot off a letter to Chief Minister V Narayanasamy, saying the Act passed by Parliament is applicable to the union territory and “cannot be questioned or deliberated in any manner.”

She said this after three nominated legislators from the BJP, V Saminathan, KG Shankar and S Sellaganapathy, met her and submitted a petition, bringing to her notice the government's move to bring in a resolution in the assembly on 12 February against the Citizenship Amendment Act.

The legislators had already presented a petition to the Speaker VP Sivakolundhu on 6 February, requesting him not to permit any discussion or a resolution against CAA “as it exceeds the powers of the Legislative Assembly under Government of Union Territories Act 1963.”

NHRC Notice to UP Govt After Cong Sought Action Against 'Police Atrocities' on Anti-CAA Protesters

The NHRC has sent a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government days after a Congress delegation led by senior party leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra met top officials of the rights panel and sought action against alleged police atrocities on anti-CAA protesters in the state, an official said today, reported PTI.

The Congress on 27 January moved the National Human Rights Commission demanding action against alleged police atrocities on the protesters in the state, claiming that victims have been made accused in case-related FIRs and no police officer has been named.

Aligarh Court Grants Bail to Gorakhpur Doctor Kafeel Khan

Suspended Gorakhpur doctor Kafeel Khan, who was arrested from Mumbai on 29 January for making an inflammatory speech at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), was granted bail by an Aligarh court on Monday, 10 February, IANS reported.

Chief judicial magistrate Karuna Singh granted bail to Khan on a bail bond of Rs 60,000. Two surety bonds of Rs 60,000 each would also be furnished by the guarantors.

Pondy Assembly Reconvened on 12 Feb to Adopt Anti-CAA Resolution

The Puducherry Assembly has been reconvened to meet on Wednesday, 12 February, to move an anti-CAA resolution, PTI reported.

The House is likely to have its session for a day.

Official sources told PTI that the session has been reconvened by Speaker VP Sivakolundhu and the meeting would begin at 9:30 am.

The main agenda of the session is for the territorial government to bring in an anti-CAA resolution, they said.

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday granted interim protection from arrest to a 22-year-old student-activist in a sedition case lodged for allegedly shouting slogan in support of jailed JNU student Sharjeel Imam at an LGBTQ event in Mumbai.

Justice SK Shinde, who was hearing the anticipatory bail plea of the student, Urvashi Chudawala, said in the event of arrest, the petitioner shall be released on a personal bond of Rs 20,000.

Bhim Army Chief Chandrashekhar Azad and former CIC Wajahat Habibullah have filed an application in the Supreme Court of India to intervene in the petition filed before the court asking for the removal of the protesters at Shaheen Bagh in Delhi.

In their application, Azad, Habibullah and Bahadur Abbas Naqvi have argued that the petition is “collusive and motivated” and that it is intended to “enable the administration [to] use the orders of this Honorable Court to justify police force and excesses on women who are protesting peacefully in Shaheen Bagh.”

A Delhi court has granted bail to one person who was arrested in connection with protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act near Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi on 15 December last year.

Additional Sessions Judge Gulshan Kumar granted the relief to Mohd Haneef on furnishing a bail bond of Rs 20,000, reported PTI.

During the hearing, police opposed the bail plea and said allegations against Haneef were serious in nature, and the investigation was at its initial stage.

Cong to Start 2nd Phase of Anti-Caa March From Thursday

Opposition Congress today announced it would start its second phase of 'Padyatra' (march) against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act across the north bank of Brahmaputra from Thursday.

The 'padyatra' will begin from Behali in Sonitpur and conclude in Nalbari on 20 February.
