Yakub Memon has submitted a mercy petition to the Maharashtra Governor this evening, in a last effort to prevent his death sentence on July 30, incidentally also his birthday.

The 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts convict’s curative petition was dismissed by the Supreme Court earlier in the day.

Memon, the only convict on death row in the case, handed over his mercy petition to the authorities of the Central Prison here, where he is currently lodged.

Gedam, who met Memon yesterday with his cousin, and also today, filed the mercy petition post his meeting with Memon.

Shubal Farooque, Memon’s Delhi-based lawyer, also met the convict today.

When asked about the validity of a second mercy petition, advocate Gedam said that the first had been filed by his brother Suleman Memon, while this was the first mercy petition filed by Yakub himself.

Jail superintendent Yogesh Desai did not respond when approached for his comment, but he had earlier dropped hints by saying that the jail has all the facilities to carry out the execution.

Yakub Memon, who chose to speak out after his curative petition was rejected, still has options open.
