On 8 April 2018, an 18-year-old girl attempted to set herself on fire outside Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s official residence. She alleged that then BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar had raped her at his Unnao home in 2017.
More than two years later, Sengar has now been pronounced guilty of rape and intimidation under Section 376 IPC and Section 5(c) POCSO Act. In addition, Sengar and six others have been convicted of culpable homicide not amounting to murder in the death of the survivor’s father.
Justice, however, did not come easy. It came after a series of mysterious deaths, freak ‘accidents’, prolonged spells of harassment and a survivor’s battle for her life. Here’s her complete story.
