At 67,385, India records highest number of babies born globally on New Year's Day

Nearly 400,000 babies were born around the world on New Year's Day with India recording the highest number of these births worldwide at 67,385, the UN children's agency said.

An estimated 392,078 babies were born around the world on New Year's Day, according to UNICEF. Of this, an estimated 67,385 babies were born in India, the most globally. China comes in second with 46,299 births.

“The beginning of a new year and a new decade is an opportunity to reflect on our hopes and aspirations not only for our future, but the future of those who will come after us,” UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore said.

'Captain America' Actor Arrested for Allegedly Stabbing Her Mother

Actor Mollie Fitzgerald, who featured in a minor role in "Captain America: The First Avenger", has been arrested by the police in the US state of Missouri, for allegedly stabbing her mother.

Fitzgerald, 38, was arrested on New Year's Eve by the police in Olathe, Kansas, the Olathe Police Department said in a statement posted on Twitter.

According to the police, its officers responded to an armed disturbance at the home of her mother, 68-year-old Patricia E Fitzgerald.

Upon arriving, Patricia was discovered with an apparent stab wound, and was pronounced dead on the scene.

"A 38-year-old, white female, known to the victim, was contacted on scene and transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.This case remains under investigation by the Olathe Police Department," the police initially said.

Maha: Unidentified Woman Ends Life by Jumping From Skywalk

An unidentified woman allegedly committed suicide by jumping from a skywalk in Maharashtra's Thane city, police said on Thursday.

The mishap took place near the Teen Hath Naka junction here around 11 pm on Wednesday.

The woman, believed to be in early 20s, climbed the skywalk located close to a mall near the junction and jumped from it, senior police inspector A S Pathan said.

She was rushed to a hospital where she died during treatment, he said.

The deceased was yet to be identified, the official said, adding that they were trying to find out from other police stations if there was any missing person complaint.

Delhi Metro Launches Free Wifi Services on Airport Express Line

The Delhi Metro on Thursday launched free high-speed WiFi services in train coaches on its Airport Express Line, the first such facility in any country in the South Asian region, officials said.

The 22.7-km swankiest line on the Delhi Metro network has six stations.

The WiFi facility, with 2 Mbps speed, inside train coaches on the Airport Line was launched by DMRC chief Mangu Singh in a running train on the Airport Express Line.

The DMRC plans to extend the facility to Lines 1-6, officials said.

WiFi facility is already available on platforms of the Blue Line and the Airport Express Line, officials said.

"At present underground metro train WiFi facility is available in Russia, South Korea and China. This is the first such facility in India and the South Asian region," a senior official said.

TMC's No-Confidence Motion Against Bhatpara Municipality Chairman Passed

The no-confidence motion moved by the Trinamool Congress against Bhatpara Municipality chairman and BJP leader Sourav Singh was passed by a margin of 19-0 in the 35-member civic body on Thursday, a senior minister said.

"A trust vote was held on Thursday morning and we won it by a margin of 19-0. The BJP councillors didn't vote," state Food and Supplies Minister Jyotipriyo Mullick said.

The Trinamool Congress councillors of the BJP- controlled civic body had served a no-confidence notice on chairman Sourav Singh in December.

The municipality has 35 members but its effective strength is 32.

Reacting to the development, BJP MP of Barrackpore Arjun Singh, under whose constituency the civic body falls, said, "We are seeking legal recourse against the illegal trust vote."

Copter Crash Kills Taiwan’s Top Military Officer, 7 Others

Taiwan’s top military official was killed in an air force helicopter crash Thursday morning that killed seven other people, the defense ministry said.

Five people survived the crash in mountains outside the capital.

Army Pays Homage to Two Jawans Killed in Rajouri Jammu

The Army on Thursday paid tributes to two jawans who lost their lives as security forces foiled a major infiltration bid by terrorists along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district.

Naik Sawant Sandip Raghunath, 29, and Rifleman Arjun Thapa Magar, 25, were killed on Wednesday during an exchange of fire with heavily armed terrorists in a forest in Naushera sector.

A wreath laying ceremony with full military honours was organised at the Air Force Station (IAF) here, a defence spokesman said.

The mortal remains of the soldiers are being flown to their respective native villages wherein their last rites will be carried out with full military honours, the spokesman said.

Naik Sawant Sandip Raghunath and Rifleman Arjun Thapa Magar were brave, highly motivated and sincere soldiers, the spokesman said.

IS Claims Deadly Attack on Police in Russian Caucasus

Two men who attacked a police post this week killing at least one officer in the Russian Caucasus were fighters from the Islamic State jihadist group, the IS propaganda agency Amaq said.

The perpetrators rammed a car into a traffic police post outside the city of Magas in Ingushetia region around 5:30 pm on Tuesday, after which they attacked policemen with knives, according to the regional government.

The Amaq statement on Telegram posted late Wednesday said the men were "two fighters from Islamic state" who killed two officers and injured others.

The Ingushetia regional government and regional investigators said one officer died from injuries. There has been no official confirmation of a second police death.

The attackers were Akhmed Imagozhev, a well-known arm wrestler, and Mikail Miziev, both residents of Ingushetia and Russian citizens.

Miziev was shot dead by police while Imagozhev is in hospital, Ingushetia's government said.

Six people were killed and 13 injured after a bus skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district on Thursday, police said.

The bus was on its way from Surankote to Jammu when the accident happened at Siot, they said. Police said a recuse operation, assisted by the locals, is underway.

They said some of the injured are in critical condition.

CDS Focuses on Preparing Roadmap for Creation of Air Defence Command

In one of his first decisions, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat has issued directions to prepare a roadmap by 30 June to create an air defence command to enhance security of India's skies.

Some of the areas identified for bringing in tri-services jointness and synergy include setting up of common "logistics support pools" in stations where two or more services have their presence, officials said.

"The CDS directed that a proposal to create Air Defence Command be prepared by June 30," said an official.

He also set out priorities for execution of various initiatives by 31 December to achieve synergy among the three forces.

The Pakistan Army shelled mortars along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district, a defence spokesman said on Thursday.

The Indian Army retaliated to the shelling that took place on Wednesday night.

"Pakistan Army initiated unprovoked ceasefire violation by firing of small arms and shelling with mortars along the LoC in Krishna Ghati sector in district Poonch around 2100 hours on Wednesday", the spokesman said.

The firing stopped at 2330 hours.

4 Children Among 18 Killed in Sudan Military Plane Crash

Four children were among 18 people killed when a Sudanese military transport plane crashed after take off from West Darfur state, an army spokesperson said.

The plane crashed five minutes after take off from an airport in the state capital El Geneina, after delivering aid to the area, which had been hit by recent deadly tribal fighting.

"An Antonov 12 military plane crashed on Thursday night after take off from El Geneina killing its seven-member crew, three judges and eight civilians, including four children, who were onboard," the spokesperson Amer Mohammed Al-Hassan said.
