Media Wasn’t Talking About Assam Floods, So This Comedian Did
In a YouTube video, stand up comedian Abhineet Mishra talks about the Assam floods and the apathy around it
Remember Abhineet Mishra? The same dude who joked about the media’s apathy about the miners trapped in a Meghalaya rat hole in a video that went viral?
Well, this year, he is back - with yet another scathing attack.
On our collective apathy about the devastating Assam floods, which have affected more than 52 lakh people in the state.
In the eight-minute long video, Mumbai-based Abhineet Mishra makes some very important observations, that force one to think, and also, let out a wry smile or two.
Hours of coverage for the India-New Zealand match being halted due to the rains, but little to no coverage for many days of work/study/play being halted due to flooding. Seems unfair, no?
At one point in Abhineet’s video, you can actually see how a ‘pool of water’ consumes a house. Making his joke, about a house in a swimming pool, brutally poignant.
Taking a subtle dig at the North east’s most visible representative in the Cabinet, Mishra talks about giving a spin to the bottle cap challenge which actually makes sense.
Ya, because poaching dead animals is easier than poaching anything else. Oh, the pathos of that comment!
Can’t disagree on that one. The acting is also really bad tbh.
While most stand-up comedy videos thrive on showing off a chuckling audience, Mishra’s act has none.
Here again, he makes a powerful point - the empty room signifies the collective apathy of the media and general public, about the events happening in the North East.
For those who think Mishra is going overboard with his commentary, here’s what the 31-year-old HR professional - who moonlights as a comedian - himself notes, “You may think that I have gone overboard with this joke, but there’s a set of 1 million people in the Northeast who are hoping and dreaming of going overboard.”
