People are colouring their selfies blue and posting them on social media for a cause, that too a noble one.

Social media users have taken it upon themselves to show their support for popular model, actress and TV host, Sonika Chauhan, who was killed in a car accident in Kolkata last year.

The accident took place when Chauhan was travelling with actor Vikram Chatterjee, who was behind the wheel. Chatterjee was later arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, reported NDTV.

While Vikram awaits for a judgement from the Kolkata High Court, people are posting their blue-coloured selfies in memory of Sonu (as friends, family and well wishers liked to call Sonika) and to spread awareness about the perils of drinking and driving.

People are not just posting their own selfies, but are also nominating their friends to spread the word.

But the question here is, why BLUE?

The Quint spoke to some of Sonika’s closest friends who have shared their blue selfies on social media and they claim that blue was Sonu’s favourite colour. They wanted it to be the colour of the social awareness campaign #dontdrinkanddrive.

Even Tollywood celebrities like Swastika Mukherjee and Anindya Chatterjee took to Twitter express solidarity with Sonika and spread awareness for the campaign.
