After a committee set up by the University Grants Commission (UGC) recommended that the word ‘Muslim’ be removed from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and the word ‘Hindu’ be dropped from the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Redditors debated the pros and cons of the move.

While some believed that the recommendation was a step in the right direction, others believed that it was a well-meaning move that would be largely ineffective in making India any more secular than it already is.

A few pointed out the that minority institutions play an important role, one which is not merely ornamental or which concerns itself with the name of the institution. Since the ruling is applicable only to public institutions, however, private minority institutions, such as the CMC, shall not have to make any changes.

A few users invariably found humour in the situation.
