A photo of a woman police officer breastfeeding a hungry baby in an Argentinian hospital has gone viral on Facebook. It's a simple act, but to the baby and to several thousands on social media, officer Celeste Ayala is certainly a hero.
The photo was posted to Facebook by Marcos Heredia, who said that he witnessed Ayala comfort and breastfeed a hungry baby while on duty at the La Plata Children’s Hospital.
According to Heredia, who tagged the officer in the Facebook post, Ayala was attending the busy hospital on 14 August when she noticed the baby.
Many Spanish-language websites reported that the 6-month-old baby is the youngest of six siblings, who were in the process of being placed into foster care because their biological mother did not have the resources to take care of them.
The children were at the hospital for the medical exams that they needed to take before being moved into foster care.
Ayala explained to local media in Buenos Aires that she noticed that the hospital staff were overwhelmed so she, a mother of two, asked if she could comfort and feed the baby.
Cristian Ritondo, Minister of Security of the Province of Buenos Aires, tweeted that his office received Ayala to notify her of her promotion.
He further wrote that they thanked her in person “for that gesture of spontaneous love that managed to calm the baby’s cry.”
