Max, the police Labrador who detected 8 kg of RDX near the Taj Mahal Palace hotel during the 26/11 attack died on 8 April. The sniffer dog had saved countless lives by sniffing out the explosives hidden in a sling bag near the hotel.

The dog had retired in 2014 after 10 years of service. He was also credited for unearthing explosives at the Zaveri Bazaar blast site in 2011 and the 7/11 attack on Mumbai.

The Labrador was born in 2004 and joined the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad when he was just a puppy. Max’s bravery earned him a Bolshoi gold medal which was presented to him by Amitabh Bachchan.

Max died in a retirement home in Virar with only his former handler Subhash Gawde and caretaker Fizza Shah present. Other police officers could not make it to his funeral due to IPL security arrangement commitments. He was wrapped in the tricolour and bid farewell by an emotional staff and Gawde.
