Gravity is working against me and gravity wants to bring me down,” Union Minister Piyush Goyal appears to be humming these very lyrics from John Mayer’s popular song, titled Gravity. The Minister of Commerce & Industry was trending all over twitter, for all the wrong reasons!

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, 12 September, Goyal made a statement which left netizens in splits. He said:

“Don’t get into the calculations that you see on television: ‘if you are looking at a 5 trillion economy the country will have to grow at 6-7 per cent (GDP).’ Don’t get into these maths. Maths have never helped Einstein discover gravity.”

Later, when his ‘Einstein’ comment exploded on social media, Piyush Goyal put out a statement with further clarification.

“The comment that I made had a certain context. Unfortunately some friends have sought to remove the context, pickup one line and create a very mischievous narrative.”
