While it is true that women face sexism every day, it would be wrong to assume that men aren’t victims of it.
As a thread on Reddit shows, men can be, and are, at the receiving end of sexism, sexual and domestic abuse, and workplace harassment too. Male Reddit users have narrated incidents of sexism they’ve experienced on the AskReddit subreddit.
Created around six months ago, it is now archived, meaning that users can’t add or reply to the thread.
Sexism, no matter who it is directed at, is underscored by stereotypical assumptions. As the replies posted on the thread indicate, assumptions commonly associated with men include, but are not limited to, the belief that all men are paedophiles, incapable of being successful single parents, that their consent is a given and are readily available, and their response to sexual initiative by the other sex is always positive.
The thread has several other eye-opening responses, check them out here.
