Google has put up a special doodle to mark eminent tabla player Lachhu Maharaj's 74th birth anniversary. Born Lakshmi Narayan Singh, Lachhu Maharaj hailed from a family of musicians and was born on October 16,1944.A
A product of the Banaras gharana , he was trained by his father Vasudev Maharaj, going on to become a celebrated tabla maestro of his time. Lachhu Maharaj started giving stage performances when he was 8-years-old.
Despite his best act being a solo in classical concerts, he also played the tabla for several films. Lachhu Maharaj had impressed legendary tabla player Ahmed Jaan Thirakwa with his skills.
A prominent tabla player, Lachhu Maharaj was nominated for the Padma Shri, but he refused to accept it. He felt the appreciation of his audience was enough of an honour.
Maharaj died in Varanasi on 28 July 2016 at the age of 72 years.
Today's Google doodle has Lachhu Maharaj drawn with the Google logo's primary colours in blue, red, yellow and green. He is seen playing a tabla in the google doodle as he performs for his audience.
