‘Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home.’

Although one may assume that Rowling has answered all possible questions in the books, fans keep coming up with situational predicaments for the author and producers.

The latest one that went viral via Tumblr asks a very simple question – why were there only about 40 students in Harry’s class, when in fact JK Rowling had mentioned in an interview that there were 1,000 students at Hogwarts?

A Tumblr fan account, marauders4ever, brings us a very depressing yet plausible theory. Think about it, all those students in Class of 1998 would have been conceived within the period of 1979-1981, which were also the prime years of the Dark Lord’s reign. During this time, wizards were joining The Order of the Phoenix, or becoming Death Eaters, some went into hiding and probably many other decided to not bring a child into the world. All these factors led to a small wizarding population a decade later.

Depressing, eh?
