IMD predicts that Delhi will witness ‘cold day’ to ‘severe cold day’ conditions until New Year.
Delhi denizens woke up to the year's coldest day this morning with the temperature dropping to 2.4 degrees, the lowest of the season. Due to heavy fog on Saturday morning, four flights have been diverted from Delhi airport and 24 trains are running late due to low visibility as per an ANI report.
Since 14 December, most parts of the city have been witnessing "cold days" or "cold spell" for the last 13 days now.
On Friday, the mercury level touched 4.2 degrees, three notches below normal. "The mean maximum temperature for December was less than 20 degrees Celsius only in 1919, 1929, 1961 and 1997," an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
Freezing and teeth chattering Delhiites turned to social media for some warmth. Many even wished for summer to be back soon, as the IMD predicts the mean maximum temperature to drop even further until New Year.

According to the IMD, a “cold day” is when the maximum temperature is at least 4.5 notches below normal. A “severe cold day” is when the maximum temperature is at least 6.5 degrees Celsius below normal.
"Severe cold day" conditions are predicted until December 29.
