Bengali filmmaker and Padma Bhushan awardee – Mrinal Sen – passed away on Sunday, 30 December at the age of 95.

Having made classics such as ‘Bhuvan Shome’, ‘Calcutta 71’, 'Padatik' and 'Ek Din Achanak', Sen was credited with introducing the Indian audience to a new style of cinema which engaged with a host of social issues from a bold left perspective. Widely regarded by colleagues and people from every film industry around India as one of the best, Mrinal Sen was a pioneer of film direction in his generation.

Sen, a contemporary of Satyajit Ray, was famous for the socially relevant films that he directed during his career.

BJP leader Rajyavardhan Rathore described his fils as “beautiful depictions of social realities,” as he paid tribute to the Bengali director.

Vasundhara Raje described the passing away of the director as the “end of an era”.
