Every Diwali, there is a yearly ritual at my home. Almost two weeks before the auspicious day, cleaning of EVERYTHING begins – from the plates in the kitchen to the curtains of the drawing room – everything is washed and cleaned.

Cut to a week before the auspicious day when the Diwali shopping begins. That’s the time when we buy lights, lamps, fancy candles and decorative diyas, in preparation for the big day.

But as we grow used to buying decorative candles and diyas from supermarkets, we rarely think about the lesser privileged sellers on a footpath, offering beautiful earthen diyas for sale.

“Waiting for a customer. If someone come and purchases, we can also celebrate Diwali”

This picture uploaded on Imgur was captioned “waiting for a customer. If someone comes and purchases, we can also celebrate Diwali” shows the plight of these people.

Redditors then debated on the deplorable conditions of their living.
