Hello world, today we wake up to Marathi language day aka Marathi bhasha diwas! Every year, on 27 February, Marathi language day is celebrated in Maharashtra and even other states like Goa and some regions of Karnataka, so today we encourage everyone to celebrate this day by embracing these six Marathi phrases that fit into our every day life just perfectly.
1. Aaiga - ‘Oh Mummy’
“Aaiga” is the Marathi equivalent of “oh mummy” only with way more feel. An “Aaiga” is super versatile, from stubbing your toe to hearing some indigestible saucy gossip, it’s got you covered. The beauty lies in the“tone” of the beholder. So make sure if you’re using this word, say it with conviction and intensity like you truly mean it!
2. Thamba - ‘Stop. Like now’
“Thamba” means stop and is the perfect word to use when your mother’s rant is uncontrollable, just like your need to defy everything that she tells you to do. However there’s so much more to put a stop to than just your mom’s long lectures. For example, a “Thamba” on Monday mornings or never ending meetings, confusing conference calls and even WhatsApp group spams, in fact you might just have to put a “thamba” on me because I don’t know where to end this list.
3. Aata Maajhi Satakli - ‘I’ve Lost My Temper’
Thanks to Singham this phrase became wildly popular among non-marathi speakers and gained legendary status thereafter. Use it for an unrelenting boss who mails you your seventh re-do of the day, or anyone who's basically too uncool and makes you lose yours.
4. Aai Shapath- ‘Mother Promise!’
“Aai Shapath” aka the mother of Marathi phrases and quite literally so, what it means is what every desi kid used as self defence at one point of time – mother promise! It’s in the rules, mother promise is the epitome of promises and if you want to know where your pizza guy has REALLY reached, just make him swear…on his mom, you guys!
5. Chaan, Khup Chaan, Le Bhaari - ‘Wow, Wowza, Wohoo!’
Progressing from good, too good and mind-blowing, these three Marathi words are perfect adjectives. If you want to up your compliment game, use these instead!
Kasa Kaye - ‘Hey, Whatsuppppp?’
“Kasa Kaye” or the updated version of a “what’s up” makes you feel like this is no ordinary question being asked in an ordinary fashion to an ordinary person. If you’re feeling the vibe use it on your tribe.
