Tanu and Manu along with their set of eccentric friends and flabbergasted family members return after a gap of 4 years and boy aren’t we glad! No point burdening you with long-winded reasons about why you should go watch this one. Let’s just cut to the chase and straightaway tell you that this 120 min affair can be best described in a single word and that is SUPERB. From the screenplay to the dialogues, from the performances to the musical score, the film is absolutely phenomenal.

Tanu weds Manu Returns starts off with a brief recap of Tanu’s shaadi with Manu. Director Anand L Rai then steers his film on a course that regular Bollywood films don’t dare to tread on. He tells us the story of life after the haloed saat – phere.

Heavily married, Tanu and Manu are now settled in London when Manu’s bovine existence is getting on Tanu’s nerves. Main insaan hoon lighter nahi retorts a fuming Manu when his wife complains of there being no spark left between them. The two go their separate ways until a twist in the tale gets the party soaring. Rattling off in perfect Haryanvi is Tanu’s hamshakal or lookalike Kumari Kusum Sangwan or Datto, a national level athlete who wins Manu’s heart at first sight.

In an industry where a ‘double – role” entails merely sporting 2 different shades of lipstick, Kangana is a delight to watch. Both as the madcap Tanu and the short haired, freckled Haryanvi Datto, she is incredible. Secure and understated, Madhavan proves to be a perfect foil for a flamboyant Kangana. Soft-spoken and emotional, our beloved Manu’s chemistry with both the Tanu’s makes for an endearing watch.

While Manu and Datto are capering around each other, the star-crossed lovers, Tanu and Raja Awasthi (played by Jimmy Shergill with his irresistible charm) keep us hooked. The usual suspects are all in attendance, Swara Bhasker as Tanu’s best friend, Eijas Khan as Manu’s buddy and Deepak Dobriyal (who gets to mouth the best dialogues) as our favourite Pappi. Amongst the new entrants, Rajesh Sharma as Datto’s elder brother and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub as Chintu ensure there isn’t a single dull moment.

R Madhavan pursues Kangana Ranaut in a funny scene from Tanu Weds Manu Returns.

Tanu weds Manu Returns is gobsmackingly good.

Firstly, because it is a sequel that is better than the prequel.

Secondly, the sharp direction by Anand Rai and Himanshu Sharma’s witty writing has ensured that it doesn’t fall prey to the widespread epidemic of the “rotten second half” that seems to have infected nearly all our recent Bollywood films .

And finally, unlike the other films, this movie has far more jokes and funnier ones, than what we saw in the trailer. So if you loved the two-minute trailer, just imagine how much you are going to adore the two-hour movie!

The bitter aftertaste of Bombay Velvet needs this spicy hug of humour and fun. I’m not going to nitpick and find faults where there aren’t any. It’s a must watch. I’m going with 5 QUINTS out of 5. Book those tickets NOW!
