A formal complaint has been lodged, with the Mumbai Commissioner and Maharashtra’s Women's Commision, against YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia aka ‘BeerBicepsGuy’, comedian Samay Raina, influencer Apoorva Makhija, and the organisers of the show India’s Got Latent, ANI reported.
The complaint alleged that abusive language was used on the show. The letter alleged that the show featured ‘inappropriate jokes about women’ that were made without regard for the effect it would have on young audiences or its effect on women’s dignity.
Allahbadia issued an apology on social media with a video captioned, “I shouldn’t have said what I said on India’s got latent. I’m sorry.”
Ranveer Allahbadia said, in his apology video, “My comment was not just inappropriate, it was not even funny. Comedy is not my forte. I am just here to say sorry. Many of you asked if this is how I wished to use my platform and obviously, this is not how I wish to use it. I am not going to give any context or justification or reasoning behind whatever happened. I am just here for an apology. I personally had a lapse in judgement. It was not cool on my part.”
“The podcast is watched by people of all ages. I don’t want to be the kind of person that takes that responsibility lightly and family is the last thing I would disrespect. I need to use this platform better; that’s my learning from this experience,” he added.
Allahbadia further said that he has asked the makers of the video to ‘remove the insensitive sections from the video’.
In a clip that's going viral on social media, Allahbadia asked a contestant on ‘India’s Got Latent’, “Would you rather watch your parents have sex for the rest of your life or join in once to make it stop?”
Many netizens have criticised the question and the reaction from the other panelists and the audience, many of whom can be heard laughing.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that while he hasn't watched the video clip in question yet, he came to know that it's “very vulgar”.
“I have been informed about this, though I have not watched it yet. I came to know that it was very vulgar and this was wrong. Everyone has freedom of speech but this freedom ends when we encroach upon others' freedom. Everyone has limits, if anyone crosses them, action will be taken,” Fadnavis said.
ANI quoted former National Commission for Women (NCW) Chief and Rajya Sabha MP Rekha Sharma as saying, “The video is very shocking and I think whether it is a female or a male, this kind of joke is never accepted by society. Making jokes about a mother or a female’s body doesn't look good and somewhere it shows how today's youth has stopped down to such a level morally.”
