Investigators are looking through the shooter’s home and belongings to ascertain what the markings might mean.

Johnson, who according the Telegraph, had a white stepmother, wanted to “kill white people.”

In the stand-off that lasted roughly two hours, Johnson hid in the garage from where the police tried to carry out negotiations, before delivering a bomb through a robot to kill him. Defending their move, the police said there was no other way to eliminate the shooter without putting more officers at risk.

The army veteran had practised military-style drills and trained at the Academy of Combative Warrior Arts, a private self-defense school that teaches special tactics.

Mike Rawlings, the Dallas mayor described Johnson as a “mobile shooter” who had written manifestoes on “shooting on the move”, a manoeuvre in which an attacker fires and changes position before firing again.

According to the authorities, the gunman had amassed personal arsenal at home which included bomb-making materials, rifles and ammunition.

Recently, a neighbour had reported to investigators that Johnson had been spotted practising a seemingly military-style drill in his suburban Dallas backyard.

Johnson donned a protective vest and used a military-style semi-automatic rifle for the shooting on 7 July. The shooting marked the deadliest day for US law enforcement since the 9 September, 2001 attacks.

12 officers were killed and wounded a few blocks from the Dealey Plaza, where President John F Kennedy had been assassinated.
