A suicide bomber detonated a device near the security headquarters of the Prophet’s mosque in Medina, Saudi Arabia, Saudi-owned al-Arabiya television reported on Monday.
The Prophet’s mosque in Medina is the second holiest pilgrimage for Muslims.
According to the confirmation by the Saudi Interior Ministry, the attack in Medina killed four security officers along with the suicide bomber. Five others have been injured in the attack.
The blast followed other suicide attacks in the city of Qatif and Jeddah on Monday. Photos circulating on social media showed dark smoke arising from flames near the mosque.
Qatif is home to many members of the Shi’ite minority, at least one and possibly two explosions struck near a Shi’ite mosque.
The multiple explosions across Saudi Arabia which had been timed to coincide with the approach of Eid al-Fitr targeted US diplomats, Shi’ite worshippers and a security headquarters.
