United Nations human rights office in Moscow may be shut down soon. The United Nations human rights chief said on Thursday that the Russian government had indicated it would close the Moscow office. He also condemned the shrinking space for dissent in Russia.

In a speech to UN Human Rights council in Geneva, the UN Human Rights High Commissioner Zeid Raád Al Hussein spoke about the intention of Russian government.

I am concerned about signals received from the government regarding its intention to close our presence in Moscow.
Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, High Commissioner, UN Human Rights Council

Zeid further added that more cooperation with his office, rather than less, was needed “on the subject of the shrinking space for human rights defenders and non-governmental organisations.”
