To mark India’s 69th year of Independence, we at The Quint have launched the #IAmIndia campaign. We have had people writing letters to their grandparents, videos featuring different generations from families talking about how India has changed, and also some pretty cool graphics.

There is enough footage of Gau Rakshaks attacking suspected cattle-rustlers to constitute its own genre on YouTube. Those curious can spend hours watching gangs of men assaulting their captives with steel rods, motorcycle chains, hockey sticks, leather belts, and – on one occasion – pausing to urinate over their prostrate victims.
The Quint met a Gau Rakshak celebrity, commanding a substantial social media presence and following.
