Rail Budget 2016 was presented earlier this week. Like every year, we have been promised bullet and other high-speed trains. This year, the railway ministry’s promises come sprinkled with technology.
We can all agree that the current government is heavily focused on integrating technology, wherever possible. And the railways is set to get a solid tech upgrade. Here is what they have in store for you.
WiFi Powered Stations From Google
Google is here to rescue the railways. They have partnered with Railtel to provide fibre cable-powered Internet at railway stations in India and by the end of 2016, over 100 stations will be WiFi enabled. Google claims the Internet speed will be higher than the average in the country, i.e., 512 kbps.

Auto Ticketing Facility & Smart Cards to Be Introduced
The ministry has promised to introduce 1,780 automatic ticket vending machines and smart cards. The are also developing apps to help users book tickets and access information using smartphones. For online ticketing purposes, the existing support of 2,000 tickets per minute will be upgraded to support the booking of 7,200 tickets per minute.
Swachh Railway Abhiyaan
The ministry will introduce ‘Clean my Coach’ service that will provide passengers with the option to get their berths cleaned during the journey. Railway stations will also be ranked periodically based on regular audits and traveller’s feedback.
Joyride Train Travelling
The railway minister has also pitched the idea of having a dedicated FM Radio service for the entertainment of passengers onboard as the service isn’t available in remote areas.

The ministry plans to set up intensive security solutions across various stations. CCTVs and 24-hour helpline numbers are being put in place. 20,000 screens across 2,000 stations in the country will also be installed to keep passengers up-to-date with information.
The ministry will use drones and geo-satellite technology to monitor the progress of various railway projects being undertaken.
New-Age Tickets With Bar Codes
Tickets with barcodes are set to be introduced as part of a pilot project. This will help authenticate the traveller’s identification.
