Yu Televentures has taken its sweet time to launch the Yutopia smartphone and after much hoopla, the product finally made its public appearance. Rahul Sharma, co-founder of the brand could not hide his excitement with regards to launching the first made-in-India flagship that can give brands like OnePlus, Motorola a run for their money.
What’s so special about this device? Yu has made a flagship-level quality smartphone at an affordable price point.
Yutopia feels like the pricier cousin of Micromax Canvas 5 with its full metal body and design that fits right into everyone’s taste palette. They have also given us the first phone to get a 2K display for under 25K, and that’s a big feat when you consider the next phone with 2K display will cost you Rs 36,000 upwards.
Yu Yutopia looks like a phone that borrows its construction from Microsoft’s Lumia range (that lumping camera sensor) which is not shabby.
It’s slimmer than most of the phones in its price bracket and you need to commend Yu for this feat. Having said that, slimming it down has ensured the phone cannot pack a battery unit more than its appointed 3000mAh, which is never good enough for a high-powered device.
What is really worrying is the use of the octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor that has been in the limelight for its obvious heating issues. You don’t need to look beyond our tryst with the Sony Xperia Z3+ to understand the point of concern.
To make matters worse, the phone has not been designed to control the heating, which is a big problem that cannot be overlooked. They have paired the processor with a 4GB RAM which promises heavy-duty gaming. But will it hold up?
Yutopia is running on Cyanogen OS version 12.1 based on Android 5.1 Lollipop. The phone will be the first in Yu’s line up to get updated to Cyanogen’s Marshmallow version which is coming out soon.
Yu went to Sony and asked them for their best camera sensor. This way, Yutopia managed to get the snapper of Sony Xperia Z5-like quality. The 21-megapixel rear camera has the bulging look which reminds us of the high-end Lumia phones like Lumia 1020 and the Lumia 950. In terms of image quality, the results have been impressive so far. We will speak at length about that in our review.
The phone supports storage expansion via microSD slot. If there’s anything else that worries us about Yutopia, except for the Snapdragon 810, it’s the 3000mAh battery unit.
Yes, they might have given us quick charging 2.0, but for a 2K display phone with an octa-core processor and 4GB RAM, there is bound to be performance lags.
Yutopia is an all-round package, with an affordable price for what it offers, but Yu and Cyanogen really need to find a way to keep the heating away, or else Yutopia will be only talked about for its burning sensation.
