The Indian team took a step closer to becoming the number one team in the ICC Test rankings after they defeated West Indies in the third Test at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet on Saturday.

On the final day of what turned out to be an enthralling Test match, India set the hosts a target of 346 runs to get from a minimum of 87 overs, before bowling them out for a paltry 108, thereby securing a 237-run win and taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the four-Test series.

The win in Gros Islet was India’s third biggest win in Test matches outside the sub-continent.

The 237-run win on Saturday means India now have more wins in the Caribbean than in any other country in the world while playing away from home.

Now, irrespective of what happens in other Test series around the world, if India can beat the West Indies in the final Test match in Port of Spain, India will be crowned the number one side at the end of the series.

Interestingly, this is the first time that India have won a Test series in the Caribbean by winning more than one Test match in the series. As a result of the series win, Virat Kohli not only joins an elite group of captains who have led the Indian team to a series win in the Caribbean, but has also become the youngest Indian captain to lead the Indian team to a Test series win in the Caribbean islands.

After the win in St. Lucia, Virat Kohli now has 7 Test wins in 13 Tests as captain – that’s the second-best start an Indian captain has had to his captaincy tenure. Among Indian captains, only Virat’s predecessor MS Dhoni had more Test match wins in his first 13 Tests as captain.

On the final day, West Indies were bowled out for 108, which was their second-lowest total in Test matches against India. West Indies’ lowest total against India still remains 103, which they recorded in the first innings of the deciding Test match of the 2006 series.
