While the biggies of world cricket start switching to the shortest format in anticipation of the WT20 in March, the next-gen across the globe is going to put their skills in the 50-over format to the test over the next two weeks.

Yes, it’s time for the Under-19 World Cup.

Former three-time Champions India go in as one of the favourites– specially after Australia pulled out due to security fears –in the event that starts in Bangladesh on Wednesday. Led by young Ishan Kishan, India play their first match on the 30th against New Zealand.

The Quint takes a look at the some of the young stars to look out for at the event.

  • Hails from Patna and plays domestic cricket for Jharkhand since Bihar do not currently have a cricket association.
  • Made his Ranji Trophy debut for Jharkhand at the age of 16 years and 4 months.
  • A wicket-keeper batsman, Ishan has been named captain of the India Under-19 team at the U19 World Cup.
  • Will be the second-youngest (after a 16-year old Parthiv Patel in 2002) to captain India at the Under-19 World Cup.
  • Led India to victory in the Tri-Nation Under-19s Tournament in Sri Lanka in December 2015.
  • Ishan’s role models are said to be India’s limited overs captain MS Dhoni and former Australia stumper Adam Gilchrist.
  • Performance in ICC U19 World Cup warm-up matches: 138 v Canada U19, 15 v Pakistan U19.

  • The famous nephew of the former India batsman Wasim Jaffer.
  • A run-machine in junior cricket in Mumbai cricket circles, he previously held the record for the highest score in Indian school cricket when he made 498 as a 13-year old.
  • Struck double centuries in three consecutive innings, and hundreds in four consecutive innings, in the Cooch Behar Trophy playing for Mumbai Under-19s earlier this season.
  • Was not part of the Indian Under-19 squad that toured Sri Lanka or for the home series against Bangladesh, but forced his way into the U19WC squad on the back of a stupendous showing in domestic cricket.
  • Performance in Cooch Behar Trophy 2015-16: Matches – 6, Innings – 7, Runs – 1018, Average – 169.67, 100s – 4, 50s – 2
  • Performance in the ICC U19 World Cup warm-up matches: 36 v Canada U19, 19 v Pakistan U19.

  • Born in Mumbai but now plays Ranji Trophy for Uttar Pradesh.
  • Became the youngest cricketer to play in the IPL when he made his debut last season for Royal Challengers Bangalore.
  • In six first-class matches, he has already scored a century and a half-century and averages 37.37
  • In the two ICC U19 WC practise matches, Khan scored an 81 against Pakistan and 48 against Canada. He also picked a wicket against Canada.
  • This is the second time he will be playing in the U-19 World Cup

  • All-rounder in the true sense, can bat anywhere in the batting order, and is a very useful off-spinner.
  • Has generally opened the batting while playing for India Under-19.
  • Scored half-centuries in four of the seven matches he has played for India Under-19.
  • Scored 418 runs in 9 matches (which included one century & 4 fifties) and picked up ten wickets in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy for Under-19 years age-group in India this season.
  • Performance in ICC U19 World Cup warm-up matches: 8 v Canada U19, 28* v Pakistan U19.

  • Took to playing cricket after he was fascinated by watching Shane Warne’s bowling.
  • Made his India Under-19 debut against Bangladesh Under-19 in November 2015. He is the youngest player in the Indian squad that will compete in the Under-19 World Cup.
  • Despite being only 15 years, last season he was fast-tracked into the Under-23 team and competed in the Col. CK Nayudu Trophy, where he ended as UP’s top wicket-taker in the competition.
  • Picked up 9 wickets in 4 matches in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy (Inter-State tournament for the Under-19 age-group) earlier this season.
  • Picked up 14 scalps, and finished as the joint-highest wicket-taker in the Inter-Zonal one-day tournament for the Under-19 age-group earlier this season.
  • Extremely miserly with the ball and conceded runs at an economy rate of 3.35 in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy.
  • Performance in ICC U19 World Cup warm-up matches: 2-39 v Canada U19.

  • Born in Tonk, Rajasthan
  • Competed at the Under-16 level from the 2011-12 season and picked wickets regularly.
  • Made his India Under-19 debut in November 2015 in the home series against Bangladesh U19s.
  • Picked up three wickets in the final of the Under-19 Triangular series in Sri Lanka and helped India lift the title.
  • Performance in ICC U19 World Cup warm-up matches: 5-30 v Pakistan U19.
