Ashok Vihar’s Collapsed Building Wasn’t Declared ‘Dangerous’: NDMC

The North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) on Wednesday, 26 September, said the building which collapsed in north west Delhi's Ashok Vihar, causing the death of four children and two women, was not declared "dangerous" and had not received any complaint against it.

According to ANI, a man who was shifted to a hospital for treatment later succumed to his injuries, taking the death toll to 7.

North Delhi mayor Adesh Gupta, who visited the site of the collapsed building at Sawan Park, ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident, a statement by the NDMC said.

He said "strict action" will be taken against the guilty.

“The building was not declared dangerous by the North Delhi civic body. The building department of Keshavpuram zone of NDMC also did not receive any application for the purpose, in the period from 1 September 2017 till date, when the zone was formed.”

The civic body, however, admitted that the building was about 20-25 years old and its structure was "weak" and in a "deteriorated condition".

Two women and four children were killed and at least seven injured after a three-storey building collapsed in north west Delhi's Ashok Vihar on Wednesday.

The injured have been rushed to Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital, PTI reported, quoting local police.

The building collapse took place near Sawan Park in Ashok Vihar - Phase 3.

An official reportedly told PTI that on receiving information, the rescue operation with the help of Delhi Fire service, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Delhi Police was initiated immediately. As per reports, 12 persons were rescued.

One of the deceased women was identified as Munni. Two of the children were brothers, aged around 10 years. The other two were also siblings, a boy and his sister, aged below five years.

A call about the incident was received at 9:25 am and six fire tenders were rushed to the spot near Sawan Park, an officer said.

Two teams of the NDRF have been mobilised for rescue operations, an NDRF spokesperson said.

“Its structure was weak and in a deteriorated condition,” the official added.
