The JNUSU President’s media group has said that Kanhaiya Kumar’s condition continues to worsen. They claim that his BP has gone down to 80/56 and that his glucose has reduced dramatically.
He has been vomiting and doctors warn that there is a danger of internal bleeding if he continues his strike.
Kanhaiya, however, is refusing to discontinue the hunger strike. As of now he has been administered a saline (sodium-potassium) drip and an anti-vomiting injection.
Two groups of JNU students were on an indefinite hunger strike from 28 April to protest the punishments and penalties imposed on students in connection with the 9 February incident.
The members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) decided on Wednesday to end their strike, claiming that the authorities have taken note of their demands. The group of Left-leaning students, however, continued their strike, even as their health conditions deteriorated. Thursday was the seventh day of their strike.
Kanhaiya’s Health Deteriorates
The JNUSU President’s media group has said that students’ union President, Kanhaiya Kumar’s health is deteriorating. He has lost consciousness several times in the last week and his blood pressure has plummeted. His health parameters are not normal. Three other students have been forced to discontinue the strike as they were extremely unwell.
They also alleged that the “insensitive” JNU administration didn’t bother to take a call on this.
The administration on Wednesday issued an appeal to the students to end their strike calling it an “unlawful activity”.
The Vice Chancellor has issued a statement saying that he was “greatly concerned” about the worsening health of the students on hunger strike.
ABVP Member Saurabh Sharma Hospitalised
ABVP member Saurabh Sharma’s health deteriorated and he had to be hospitalised. BJP leaders Tarun Vijay and Manoj Tewari visited Sharma in the hospital and advised him to end the hunger strike.
