1. Terror Plot Busted; Three Arrested

Indian intelligence agencies along with Delhi Police have busted the first ever module of a global terror outfit and arrested at least three operatives from north India,The Times of India reports.

The three operatives were allegedly in touch with some people in Syria through voice over Internet protocol. The outfit was about to execute multiple strikes in Delhi, a mall in NCR and in Hardwar.

It is not yet known if the strikes were being planned to coincide with or target the Republic Day parade, at which French President François Hollande is to be the chief guest.

National Security Adviser Ajit Doval is closely monitoring the situation.

2. Beef Rumours Trigger Clashes in Haryana’s Palwal; 41 Held

Rumours of beef being smuggled in trucks triggered clashes between local residents and the police in the Palwal district of Haryana on Tuesday,The Tribune reports.

Police officials used tear gas and lathis to disperse the mob that was pelting stones; residents alleged that it was the police who were behind the ‘beef smuggling’.

Police officials, including a DSP, two inspectors, two sub-inspectors and three head constables were injured.

Forty-one people have been arrested. The mob claimed it had intercepted a truck going towards Uttar Pradesh, and alleged that it was carrying cow meat.

3. Rohith Vemula’s Suicide Reveals Letters From Bandaru, HRD Office

Union Minister of Labour and Employment Bandaru Dattatreya has been charged with abetting the suicide of Dalit student Rohith Vemula in Hyderabad.

A key factor for Dattatreya being charged is that he wrote a letter to the central government seeking its intervention in the alleged violent activities taking place at the University of Hyderabad, after a scuffle between two student groups, in which Rohith was involved.

A copy of the letter he wrote to the Minister of Human Resource Development, Smriti Irani, in August 2015 has been made public. Dattatreya’s letter is one of six that have surfaced; the other five are from Irani’s office.

But Irani has denied that her ministry pressurised the university to suspend Rohith and four other Dalit research scholars.

4. Court Sends Kejriwal Attacker to Judicial Custody for 14 Days

A Delhi court on Tuesday dismissed the bail plea of the woman who threw ink at Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal earlier this week and sent her to judicial custody for 14 days.

Bhavna Arora’s laywer said she was a victim of politics and they would move the session’s court.

Arora, a member of the Aam Aadmi Sena, claims that she has proof of a CNG scam that the Kejriwal government is allegedly involved in.

5. CBI Gets Permission to Interview Chhota Rajan

A Mumbai court on Tuesday granted the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) permission to interrogate deported mafia don Rajendra Nikhalje aka Chhota Rajan for 10 days from January 27.

The Special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act Court granted the permission on a plea by the CBI to question the gangster in connection with his role in the murder of journalist Jyotirmoy Dey in 2011.

Rajan was presented before the court via video-conference from Delhi’s Tihar Jail.

6. Danish Gangrape: Police File New Evidence

The Delhi police on Tuesday filed fresh documents in the case of the gangrape of a Danish woman in 2014, reports The Indian Express.

The documents filed pertained to the medical reports and potency test of one of the accused, police said.

Meanwhile, the court pulled up the police for filing the evidence at such a late stage. The court has fixed the next date of hearing on January 21.

7. DUSU VP Booked for Vandalising DU College Principal’s Office

Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) Vice President Sunny Dhedha was booked on Tuesday after the office of the principal at Delhi University’s Kirori Mal College was vandalised allegedly by members of right wing student’s union, Akhil Bharatiya Vishwa Parishad.

KMC principal Dinesh Khattar said Dhedha along with 40 students barged into his office and vandalised it after the college did not allow them to host an event on its premises, reports The Times of India.

An FIR has been lodged against Dhedha and several others.

8. Minor Domestic Help Raped by Five Men Near JNU

A 17-year-old girl, employed as a domestic help at a Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor’s house, was allegedly abducted and gangraped on Tuesday, the police said.

Four of the five involved have been detained.

The police said the incident took place around 4.30 pm when the girl went to a store just outside the varsity campus where a familiar man asked her to sit in his car. After getting in, she noticed the other men inside.

The girl was then allegedly offered a drink laced with sedatives and then taken to a rented room where she was raped.

9. Muzaffarnagar: Victim Made Four Suicide Bids Since Gangrape Video Surfaced

A 25-year-old woman from Muzaffarnagar, whose alleged gangrape in 2013 was recorded and was circulated via WhatsApp last week, tried to commit suicide four times in the last seven days, her family told The Indian Express.

Her family says the suicide attempts happened after she lodged an FIR on January 16, soon after the video was circulated, naming the accused. In her complaint she claimed that she was being blackmailed and that her marriage had ended as a result.

Her family says the women has attempted to kill herself several times, including trying to hang herself and jump off a terrace.

Two of the accused have been arrested, while further investigations are underway.
