Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the South African President Jacob Zuma held delegation-level talks in Johannesburg on Friday.
Modi is also scheduled to visit the Old Fort prison in Johannesburg, where Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned in 1906.
South African leader Nelson Mandela was also held at the same prison.
He will address an Indian diaspora rally in Johannesburg before leaving for Durban on Friday night.
On Saturday, the PM will visit Gandhi’s Phoenix Settlement in Durban and undertake a train journey to Pietermaritzburg in memory of the 1893 incident, when Gandhi was thrown off a train carriage on account of his skin colour.
He is also expected to attend a reception hosted by the Mayor of Durban.
He arrived in South Africa late on Thursday night as part of his four-nation Africa tour aimed at enhancing ties with the continent, particularly in the economic sphere.
South African Minister for International Relations and Cooperation, Nkoana Mashabane and Minister for Small Business, Lindiwe Zulu welcomed Modi at Air Force Base, Waterkloof, in Pretoria.
The focus of the African tour will be on deepening cooperation in areas of hydrocarbons, maritime security, trade and investment, agriculture and food. Modi will also travel to Tanzania and Kenya.
