The Ministry of External Affairs has requested the United Kingdom to initiate the process of deportation of Vijay Mallya, Vikas Swarup, MEA spokesperson said on Thursday.

The ministry has written to the High Commission of United Kingdom in Delhi requesting Mallya’s deportation. There has, however, been no response to the request, Swarup said.

A money laundering probe was launched against him in the Rs 900 crore IDBI alleged loan fraud case. He is believed to have left the country on 2 March.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had requested the government to get Mallya deported back to India through diplomatic channels.

ED is also going to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to get an Interpol Red Corner Notice (RCN).

Mallya, who is known for Kingfisher beer and airlines, is also a member of the Rajya Sabha. However, the Parliament Ethics Committee has recommended that Mallya’s Rajya Sabha membership be revoked.

A court in Hyderabad has also issued a non-bailable warrant against Mallya in a cheque-bounce case filed against him by GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd.
