Heat wave conditions have claimed 79 lives in Odisha and 49 in Telangana. There seems no respite from soaring mercury as the hot weather is likely to prevail at few places in the state for at least two days, a Disaster Management department official said on Saturday.
The government received reports of 37 deaths due to sunstroke on Saturday, but has so far confirmed the death of only two due to sunstroke in Angul and Balangir.
Eight places recorded temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius while state capital Bhubaneswar registered 41.5 degree Celsius, the Met department said.
A sum of Rs 50,000 as compensation would be provided to the families of the deceased from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF),” said Mohapatra.
Mahabubnagar district topped the chart of heat-related deaths at 39 in Telangana.
According to a bulletin issued by India Meteorological Department on Saturday, heat wave conditions are likely to prevail at a few places in Telangana on Saturday and Sunday.

The highest maximum temperature of 45 degrees Celsius was recorded at Bhadrachalam, Khammam, Nalgonda and Nizamabad. The government had advanced summer holidays for schools to 16 April from the scheduled date of 24 April.
