Vijay Mallya’s passport was suspended for 4 weeks by the Indian government, on the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) request, on Friday. Mallya is currently in the United Kingdom.
Immediately after Mallya’s passport was suspended, the ED approached the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court seeking non-bailable warrant (NBW) against him. The matter is likely to come up for hearing on Saturday.
The Passport Issuing Authority, which comes under the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), has said that Mallya’s diplomatic passport has been suspended under Section 10A of the Passports Act, 1967.
Mallya has been granted a week’s time to respond to the notice, according to an official statement which reads;
Mr Mallya has been asked to respond within one week as to why his passport should not be impounded or revoked under section 10(3)(c) of the Passports Act, 1967.
If Mallya fails to respond within the stipulated time, his passport will be revoked permanently.
