A four-storey building at Thakurli in Thane district collapsed tonight, killing nine. Incidentally, 20 families are still trapped underneath the collapse – according to an official.

The building ‘Matru Chhaya’ crashed at about 10.40 pm following heavy downpour. A massive relief and rescue operation has begun and so far three injured persons have been rescued and rushed to the hospital.
– Santosh Kadam, chief, Regional Disaster Management Committee

He, however, said that the exact number of persons trapped under the debris is yet to be ascertained.

Fire brigade teams from Thane, Kalyan, Bhiwandi, and Ambernath have been rushed to the site, he said.

The building was constructed in 1972. A few days ago, it was declared a dangerous building after a structural audit and the corporation issued eviction notices but the building was not vacated. Yesterday, parts of the building collapsed and today, it collapsed completely.
– Kalyani Patil, Mayor of Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation told NDTV

The NDTV report also revealed that a 50-member team from the National Disaster Response Force are at present occupied with rescue and relief operations at the spot. However, due to heavy rainfall overnight, these operations have been hampered.
