The CBI on July 17 registered a murder case in connection with Indore-resident and 19-year-old MBBS student Namrata Damor’s death. Namrata’s body was found railway tracks near Maksi station in Ujjain district on January 7, 2012. She was found to have secured admission illegally through the pre-medical test conducted under Madhya Pradesh’s Vyapam.
In a related incident, the CBI has registered a preliminary enquiry into the death death of journalist Akshay Singh.
Two police officers, including the then Ujjain SP Rakesh Gupta, who is now a DIG in charge of the same district, the then officer-in-charge of Kaitha police station, Abhishek Gautam, and the head of the Bhopal-based Medico Legal Institute, Dr D L Badkur, who adjudged Namrata’s death to be the result of suicide, will now come under the CBI’s scanner. A Vyapam scam kingpin, Dr Jagdish Sagar, now in jail, also figures as a suspect.

Dr B B Purohit, who performed the autopsy on Namrata’s body on January 9, 2012, had concluded that ante-mortem and post-mortem injuries on her strongly indicated her death was a case of homicide.
The police did not pursue this angle and instead said Namrata had committed suicide. Dr Purohit has sought police protection.
