Rajinikanth’s ‘Kabali’ Makes Over Rs 200 Cr Worldwide In 3 Days

Why Rajinikanth has emerged as the Sultan of the box-office.

According to latest reports, the domestic weekend figures of Kabali is over Rs 100 crore and the overseas earnings have been huge as well, taking the Rajinikanth-starrer’s box-office collections to over Rs 200 crore in just 3 days.

According to Taran Adarsh, the total net box-office collections of Kabali up north in all languages is approximately Rs 20 crore.

This takes into account only the 1000 screens in which Kabali released in north Indian theatres. According to an interview given to Firstpost, Kalaipulli Thanu, the producer of Rajinikanth’s latest film had said that it’s being released in over 5000 screens worldwide.

The film’s weekend collection from Tamil Nadu alone is anywhere around Rs 47 crore and this is despite the fact that Chennai has Rs 120 cap on the price of a film ticket!

The box-office figures from other south Indian states are as follows:

  • Andhra Pradesh: Rs 20 cr
  • Karnataka: Rs 16 cr
  • Kerala: Rs 8 cr

Kabali is reportedly raking in money overseas as well. The film released in about 500 screens in the US and collected around Rs 23 cr from the US - Canada market over 3 days - Thursday (previews) till Saturday.

The total overseas weekend collection of this film directed by Pa Ranjith is estimated to be Rs 87 crore, thereby taking the worldwide earnings of Kabali to over Rs 200 cr.

Though the exact figures vary from different sources, there is no doubt that Kabali is breaking records worldwide.

The comparisons are being made to Salman Khan’s Rs 180 crore domestic weekend for Sultan is inevitable. Both Sultan and Kabali had a release in over 5000 screens worldwide. However, it must be kept in mind that the Yash Raj film had a 5-day weekend with a festive opening day, while Rajinikanth’s film had a 3-day weekend with a normal working day opening on Friday.

Also, while Salman was about town promoting Sultan for almost a month before the film’s release via appearances on TV shows and interviews, Rajinikanth has been missing in action for the last few months, and hasn’t given a single interview or made a public appearance to promote his film yet.

And last but not the least, as per the language and star’s popularity, Sultan had a wide release in the north and Mumbai while Kabali was screened widely down south - but in Chennai which can be considered the biggest market for a Rajinikanth film - the ticket price for Kabali was restricted to just Rs 120, while the price for a Sultan ticket could go up to Rs 500 in Delhi or Mumbai over the weekend.

In other words, the verdict is out - Rajinikanth is the Sultan of the box-office.
