The weekend has not been a happy one. We’ve lost some beloved veterans.

Muhammad Ali passed away on June 3. And on June 4 came the sad news of actress Sulabha Deshpande’s demise; she passed away at her Mumbai residence after a prolonged illness.

Deshpande is known for her work in theatre and in movies – both Hindi and Marathi.

For the few who might find it difficult to place her, do recall Sridevi’s adorable mother-in-law in English Vinglish (2012) – the latter was the last Hindi film she was seen in. Among her prominent films were Bhumika (1977), Gaman (1978), Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyo Aata Hai (1980), Vijeta (1982), Virasat (1997).

Other than Hindi and Marathi films, she was also seen in numerous TV series.

Deshpande started her career in theatre by directing plays for the students of Chhabildas Girl’s High School. A leading figure in the experimental theatre movement of the 1960s, she co-founded the theatre group, Awishkar with her husband Arvind Deshpande in 1971. Her notable work on stage include Vijay Tendulkar’s fiery Shantata! Court Chalu Aahe, Sakharam Binder, Baba Harvale Aahet –  among many others.

The beloved actress received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Hindi-Marathi theatre acting in 1987. She will always be remembered for her contribution to theatre and Indian cinema.

A wide range of personalities – from Indian film veterans to politicians – took to Twitter to offer their condolences:
