Micromax subsidary brand Yu recently introduced a budget smartphone called Yuphoria in the Indian market. Priced at Rs 6,999 this budget smartphone promises a lot and will give a tough fight to Xiaomi Redmi 2 and the Motorola Moto E IInd Gen.

So let’s find out whether this smartphone is worth your hard earned money or not.

Watch: Review of Yu Yuphoria

What’s Good?

Micromax Yu Yuphoria has a ‘metal build’ something that you don’t find in smartphones priced under Rs 10,000. By metal build what they mean is that the frame is metal finish, rest of the body is made up of plastic. But the phone looks way better than the Xiaomi Redmi 2.

The phone does not feel fragile at all and it does not feel bulky either. Yu Yuphoria sports a 5-inch display that has a pixel resolution of 720 x 1280. For a budget smartphone the display is acceptable and the outdoor visibility is also good.

The processor on the Yuphoria is a ARM Cortex A53 64 bit, Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 chipset that is backed by 2 GB RAM. The processor is clocked at 1.2 GHz and also has Adreno A306 GPU.

There is also 16 GB of internal memory that can be expanded via a microSD card. The Phone operates seamlessly and does not lag much while multi-tasking. The phone comes loaded with Cyanogen operating system 12 on top of Android 5.0 Lollipop, out of the box.

The Cynogen OS 12 has had issues when it was released over the air for download, but faults have all been ironed out on the Yuphoria. The phone handles gaming with ease too.

The AnTuTu benchmark score of the Yuphoria device that we had was 21,174 which is way ahead of the Xiaomi Redmi 2 and the Motorola Moto E IInd Gen.

The front facing 5 mega-pixel camera with a 4P lens and f2.0 on the Yu Yuphoria is great for taking selfies. The camera app is easy to use and the selfies come out crisp and sharp.

What’s Bad?

The Yu Yuphoria has a 8 mega-pixel rear camera with a 5P lens and f2.2 and Yu could only get the placement right with this one. The rear camera is placed at the center of the rear panel of the smartphone.

The image quality is not that great, even in daylight. Yuphoria’s camera captures images that are hazy and distorted. Xiaomi redmi 2 has a better camera than what you see on the Yu Yuphoria.

Also you have to keep your hands really steady while capturing an image, otherwise the image comes out blurred.

Also, the phone has a non-removable 2230 mAh battery that does not last for long. The processor inside is not that power hungry but the battery management isn’t great.

It struggles to last a day. The battery also takes about an hour and a half to charge fully. The battery on the Redmi 2 and the Moto E IInd Gen lasts easily more than what the Yuphoria has to offer.

Why Buy it?

For Rs 6,999 the Yuphoria has a lot going. A refreshed design, a powerful processor, good acoustics and a good selfie camera. It gives a tough fight to the Xiaomi Redmi 2 and the Moto E IInd gen.

Xiaomi gives you a MiUi experience, the Moto E gives you a stock Android experience. But the Yuphoria gives you a much more customisable Cynogen OS.

It totally depends on whether you want a Cynogen OS experience or not. Yu Yuphoria is a great budget smartphone to own for Rs 6,999. For a stock Android experience the Moto E IInd Gen is still better.
