Dear India, the beautiful India,

Thank you. Thank you for the fighters who fought for our nation, who saw the Indian dream before it was even half of a substantial idea. Thank you for the independence that was fought through blood and sweat so that we could live and breathe freely and therefore continue to grow our country.

Thank you for giving us the freedom of speech. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to develop and grow. It’s amazing when I think from where we’ve started to what all we’ve achieved. All of these did not come easy to us. It came by blood, sweat, tears. Thank you for the culture. Thank you for the heritage. Thank you that we can grow in diversity.

But I'm sorry.

I'm sorry for the condition we have put you in today. I'm sorry we forgot your greatness. We focused more on gaining powers and lost sight of the needs of people. I'm sorry we indulged in dirty political games of saving the big ones and hammering the poor.

I'm sorry for the poor who are deprived in their needs as someone else has the supremacy of wealth. While some fly away with millions and never to return, others are being dragged to the streets and being killed in broad daylight. I'm sorry for the discrimination that exists.

Where is our Independence? We are still under bondage of our authorities. You speak what soothes their ears. I'm tired of apologising to you.

But to my fellow Indians – let’s stand tall. We have to fight in what we believe. Fight for justice. Let no one use us as a pawn in their political games.

To my motherland – you were and are the best. So bright and beautiful. Let this year be a new beginning. A new INDIA.

Respectfully,
Samuel Biswas
