It wasn't the opening partnership India started the World Cup with but Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul have created a record with their massive 136-run stand against Pakistan in Manchester.

With Shikhar Dhawan ruled out due to an injury, Rahul was moved to the opener’s slot and despite opening with Rohit Sharma in one-day cricket for the first time, the duo broke a 23-year-old record set by Sachin Tendulkar and Navjot Singh Sidhu for the highest Indian opening partnership against Pakistan in a World Cup match.

Tendulkar and Sidhu had shared a 90-run stand for the opening wicket in the 1996 World Cup in Bengaluru. India went on to post 287 before winning the match by 37 runs.

Rohit and Rahul broke the record in the 16th over with a cut against leg-spinner Shadab Khan.

After winning the toss, Pakistan put India into bat first but the openers ensured the momentum stayed with India with the vice-captain bringing up his 50 in just 34 deliveries with the help of six fours and two sixes.

KL Rahul’s wicket ended the partnership when he fell off Wahab Riaz on 57. Rohit Sharma went onto score 140.
