Collegium Clears Four Names for Elevation as Supreme Court Judges

Justice R S Reddy, Justice Hemant Gupta, Justice M R Shah and Justice Ajay Rastogi will be elevated as SC judges.

The Supreme Court collegium on Monday, 29 October, cleared the names of four judges for elevation to the top court, Hindustan Times reported.

The names of Justice R Subhash Reddy, Justice Hemant Gupta, Justice M R Shah, and Justice Ajay Rastogi have been cleared for elevation as Supreme Court judges.

According to the report, the collegium recommended unanimously the elevation of Gujarat High Court Chief Justice Reddy, Madhya Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Gupta, Patna High Court Chief Justice M R Shah, and Tripura High Court Chief Justice Ajay Rastogi.

Two Supreme Court judges will retire by the end of this year, the report said, adding that with the new appointments, the number of judges in the apex court will rise to 28.

The sanctioned strength of Supreme Court judges is 31.

The previous appointments to the Supreme Court were made in August this year, when Justice Indira Banerjee, Justice Vineet Saran and Justice K M Joseph were sworn in.

The five-member collegium is headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi.
