India has seen a rise in crime since 2014, the national crime rate which has gone from 367.5 in 2014 to 379.3 in 2016 , according to the data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) on 30 November.
Uttar Pradesh recorded 9.5 percent of the total cases of crimes registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in the country, followed by Madhya Pradesh (8.9 percent), Maharashtra (8.8 percent) and Kerala (8.7 percent).
Joint Director in the NCRB Surendra Panwar said a total of 48,31,515 cognisable crimes comprising 29,75,711 Indian Penal Code crimes and 18,55,804 special and local laws crimes were reported in 2016, showing an increase of 2.6 percent over 2015 (47,10,676 cases).
Delhi Continues to Be the Most Unsafe City for Women and Children
The Indian capital is the most unsafe among 19 major cities in the country, accounting for nearly 40 percent of rapes reported, 33 percent of crimes against women and the highest crime rate in 2016, according to data released by the NCRB today. Mumbai is at second place, accounting for 5,128 cases.
Besides, Delhi accounted for nearly 29 percent of cases of cruelty towards woman by husband and his relatives (3,645) and dowry deaths (162), the NCRB data revealed.
New Delhi also has the dubious distinction of topping the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) list in cases of murder, kidnapping and abduction, juveniles in conflict and economic offences.
The national capital recorded the highest crime rate at 182.1 compared to the national average of 77.2.
Delhi reported 38.8 percent of the total number of crimes under the Indian Penal Code.
The total number of crimes against children in 2016 was 1,06,958, which is 13.6 percent more than 2015 (94,172 cases).
Murders Have Decreased Contrary to Cases of Kidnapping
Murder cases in the country have shown declining trends during the last three years. Such cases have dropped by 5.2 percent from 32,127 cases in 2015 to 30,450 cases in 2016.
Cases of kidnapping and abduction have shown an increasing trend with the increase of 6 percent (88,008 cases) in 2016 over 82,999 cases in 2015.
Delhi reported the highest number of murders with 479 out of the total 2,194 cases , followed by Bengaluru and Patna with 195 cases.
Maximum Number of Cyber Crimes in Mumbai
Cyber crime has dropped by 8.5 percent (2015-2016) to a total of 4,172 cases. Mumbai leads with a 23.5 percent cyber crime rate, Bengaluru is second with 18.3 percent and Jaipur with 12.6 percent at third.
Riots and Group Clashes Down by 5% from 2015
A total of 61,974 cases of riots and group clashes took place in the country in 2016, down five percent from the previous year, National Crime Records Bureau data said.
Among the 61,974 cases of riots and group clashes, the highest –11,617 cases – were registered in Bihar followed by Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.
