Nearly 1.33 crore people signed up for COVID-19 vaccination on Wednesday, 28 April, the first day that the CoWIN app was opened for the third phase of the inoculation drive for citizens above 18 years of age.

Most of the registrations on Wednesday were by people in the 18-44 age bracket.

The government also rejected reports of any crashing of the server, saying, "Some of the media reports suggested that the CoWIN platform was unresponsive/overshooting the server capacity and was not able to respond to the unprecedented number of registrations taking place. Such reports that the server has crashed are incorrect and are without any basis. The server supporting the CoWIN digital portal continues to work smoothly at its highest efficiency."

The government further said that the the portal witnessed 383 million API hits within three hours (from 4 pm to 7 pm) on Wednesday, with around 1.45 crore SMSs being delivered.

‘System Functioning as Expected’

Earlier, RS Sharma, the CEO of National Health Authority took to Twitter to claim:

“There have been 79,65,720 registrations on CoWIN today, most of these in the last three hours (16:00-19:00) and mostly of 18-44 age group. We have seen a traffic of 55,000 hits per second. System functioning as expected.”

Vaccine Slots Unavailable?

Initially however, many citizens complained of servers being down for CoWIN and the Aarogya Setu app.

The government had announced that registrations on these apps would begin from 4 pm.

Many also pointed out that no vaccination slots were available for scheduling after registration, with only those above 45 being permitted to book.

Shortly after some netizens tagged these portals and the Health Ministry on Twitter, the official handle of Aarogya Setu app informed that the “minor glitch” was fixed.

Most of the registrations on Wednesday were from people in the 18 to 44 age bracket.

Addressing the issue of unavailability of vaccination centres, RS Sharma earlier said, “Some states and hospitals may come on board on 1 May or later, therefore, the visibility into the bookings/vacancy available for vaccination will be available when states, hospitals come on board. [sic]”

There’s been a lot of apprehension regarding Phase 3 of vaccination even as the government opened up registrations for all citizens above 18 years of age. With just two more days to go before the vaccination begins on 1 May, many states are yet to receive vaccine doses, which may delay the whole process.
