Yes, there has been enough brouhaha over how social media has alienated us from our loved ones and eventually made us ‘anti-social’, but the truth is we cannot live without it!  And I, being a blogger, certainly cannot!

I wake up to Facebook notifications, I am euphoric when people retweet my post and I do a little waltz when someone follows me on Instagram.  I cannot do without taking a peek into each one of these apps at least 3 times a day– when I wake up, when I get bored at work and before I go to sleep! I have a special corner for each one of these.

And why not? Social media has given me all, that I would have otherwise missed out on! So on this special day, I’d like to confess social media, tussi great ho! Here are a few reasons why social media is the best thing that ever happened to me!

Unleashing My Creativity!
Before Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat and Facebook, my creativity was restricted to a blog or a ‘secret diary’ in which I penned down my thoughts or things I was passionate about.

But now! There are a plethora of social media apps that help me explore my creative side. A couple of years ago, when I took to food blogging; I was introduced to the concept of having my own Facebook page. This worked to my advantage as it helped me display my work, upload pictures of dishes I would review and let people know about my hobby.

Soon enough I had a decent following and the likes and comments egged me on. That little colourful camera (Instagram) proved to be a great medium to talk about my work and tag numerous people in the food industry!

Celebrity Status– Ahoy!

Gone are the days when you had to tune into Zoom or follow Page 3 to know what your favourite celebrities were up to. Now you  just have to hit the like button and voila! You get a peek into their lives! Some celebrities even actively respond and reply to comments. So while I follow my favourite celebs, social media sometimes makes me feel like one– because there are an equal number of people following me too!

I remember the time I met Sanjeev Kapoor in Pune and tweeted a picture with him. My happiness knew no bounds when the Master himself retweeted the picture! It earned me a lot of followers and I got the recognition that I most wanted!

A Host Of Opportunities

Besides using it to pursue my hobby, social media is a great avenue for opportunities and raking in some moolah.

A couple of years into food blogging and a lot of restaurants already want me to review them! This has boosted my confidence and laid down the path for an alternate career for me!

Food blogging has gained a lot of traction in the recent past. (Photo courtesy : Tumblr/<a href="http://http://confessionsofamummy.tumblr.com/post/96693241227/i-love-cooking-its-one-of-my-biggest-passions">confessionsofamummy</a>)

It isn’t only food, a lot of non-food related brands keen for exposure now call me to ask if I will review their products. And this sometimes means taking off on a vacation to review a resort or a spa or a beauty service. And some even pay to review them– a win-win situation and an offer I cannot refuse!

Turning Things Around!

No girl can say no to fashion.

Social media helped bring out the fashionista in me, especially when brands approached me and wanted me to strut around in their clothes and talk about it on social media! I was a model!

The girl who would shy away from a camera, now loves posing in an OOTD almost everyday! I may have that extra bulge or that extra curve but that’s no bar! My followers on social media are testimony enough to the fact that I am riding the popularity crest!
