Dozens of endangered birds, elephants, horses and dogs tortured and kept in unhygienic conditions were rescued from a circus company in Maharashtra’s Nanded on Friday.

Two managers of the circus have been detained and booked for cruelty under Section 11 of the Prevention of Animal Cruelty Act.

“When we found that the animals were tortured, we registered a case under the Prevention of Animal Cruelty Act. Two managers have been arrested,” Nanded’s Deputy Superintendent of Police, Vijay Kabade said.

The rescued animals have been sent to the city zoo.
